Despite a substantial literature on nonparametric two-sample goodness-of-fit testing in arbitrary dimensions, there is no mention there of any curse of dimensionality. In fact, in some publications, a parametric rate is derived. As we discuss below, this is because a directional alternative is considered. Indeed, even in dimension one, Ingster, Y. I. [(1987). Minimax testing of nonparametric hypotheses on a distribution density in the l_p metrics. Theory of Probability & Its Applications, 31(2), 333–337] has shown that the minimax rate is not parametric. In this paper, we extend his results to arbitrary dimension and confirm that the minimax rate is not only nonparametric, exhibits but also a prototypical curse of dimensionality. We further extend Ingster's work to show that the chi-squared test achieves the minimax rate. Moreover, we show that the test adapts to the intrinsic dimensionality of the data. Finally, in the spirit of Ingster, Y. I. [(2000). Adaptive chi-square tests. Journal of Mathematical Sciences, 99(2), 1110–1119], we consider a multiscale version of the chi-square test, showing that one can adapt to unknown smoothness without much loss in power.  相似文献

We examine the effects of product variety and inventory levels on store sales. Using 4 years of data from stores of a large retailer, we show that increases in product variety and inventory levels are both associated with higher sales. We also show that increasing product variety and inventory levels has an indirect negative effect on store sales through their impact on phantom products—products that are physically present at the store, but only in storage areas where customers cannot find or purchase them. Our study highlights a consequence of increased product variety and inventory levels that has previously been overlooked in studies of retail product variety and inventory management. It also quantifies the impact of phantom products on store sales. In addition, our study provides empirical evidence to support earlier claims that higher product variety and inventory levels lead to an increase in defect rate. We discuss the implications of our findings for retail inventory and assortment planning and for the design of retail stores.  相似文献

Durairajan and Raman (1996 a, b) studied the robustness of Locally most powerful invariant (LMPI) tests for compound normal model in control and treatment populations. In the present paper, the Locally most powerful (LMP) tests are constructed for no contamination in normal mixture model through testing the parameter of mixture of distributions and the mixing proportion. The expected performance of LMP tests are compared using Efron's Statistical Curvature on the lines of Sen Gupta and Pal (1991). The Locally most powerful similar (LMPS) tests for the equality of control and treatment populations in the presence of nuisance parameters are also constructed. The World Wide Web is viewed as a desirable medium for public relations by many organizations. Given the evolving nature of the Web and the mixed findings about commercial successes of Web sites, little is known about the managerial aspects of Web site research, planning, and evaluation. This study found that, in many cases, Web site planning is done by trial and error based on subjective knowledge and intuition, with little or no formal research and evaluation.Interviews with persons responsible for making Web site decisions for organizations revealed that competition and the desire to establish an Internet presence were the driving forces in deciding to develop a Web site. India is an important frontier for economic growth, investments, and development. The service sector, like the manufacturing industry, in India is booming. Following the trend of their western counterparts, service organizations in India are implementing enterprise‐level information and communication technologies (ICTs) to support service processes. In this paper, we used socio‐technical systems theory to develop hypotheses about the effects of ICTs on the five job characteristics, i.e., skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy, and feedback, in the job characteristics model (JCM) in a service organization (a bank) in India. We also tested the entire JCM that relates job characteristics to job satisfaction and job performance via various mediators and moderators. In a 32‐month longitudinal field study of 1743 employees, we gathered one wave of data before an ICT implementation and two waves after the implementation. We found that, although the ICT enriched employees' job characteristics, employees reported significantly lower job satisfaction and job performance. To understand this puzzling finding, we conducted a qualitative study and identified four contextual forces that contribute to these results and hinder successful implementation of ICTs in the service sector in India and, possibly, other developing countries: environmental barriers, learning difficulty, culture shock, and employee valuation.  相似文献
