“Smuggled Refugees”: The Social Construction of North Korean Migration

In this paper, I demonstrate the identity transformation of North Korean women in interaction with state and non-state actors and domestic and regional structures, which I formulate for the purposes of this paper. From a state-centric social constructivist perspective in politics and international relations, I examine how the identities and interests of North Korean women are constituted and reconstituted in the Democratic People's Republic of Korea, the People's Republic of China and five South-East Asian countries along their migration routes before they reach the Republic of Korea – the so-called “Seoul Train in the Underground Railway”. Back in their country of origin, North Korean women are socially constructed as Confucian communist mothers. In China, the most frequently depicted images of North Korean women are trafficked wives. By paying for smugglers to cross borders to neighbouring South-East Asian countries, North Korean women finally become the agents of their own destiny, refugees in waiting to be transferred to South Korea.     

Motivational Interviewing Intervention With College Student Tobacco Users: Providers' Beliefs and Behaviors

Abstract

Objective: This study assessed college student health providers' use of Motivational Interviewing (MI) with tobacco users, as well as their beliefs about the use of brief interventions to help college student tobacco users quit. MI is recommended by the United States Public Health Service to increase tobacco users' willingness to quit. Participants: Participants included 83 clinicians from health clinics at 7 different universities in North Carolina. Methods: Paper-and-pencil baseline survey from a cluster randomized trial of college student health clinicians. Results: Twenty-two percent of respondents reported always or usually using MI during the past month for tobacco-using patients not ready to make a quit attempt. Student health providers also reported information with regards to their beliefs about tobacco cessation treatment, barriers to intervening with patients, and confidence in motivating students to consider quitting. Conclusions: Results highlight the need to encourage clinicians' use of motivationally focused interventions with student tobacco users.

潘新和的中国写作教育史、写作教育思想史研究,不仅具有写作学研究的拓荒意义,更具有学术研究导向意义。他在许多人忙于横向引入,忙于建构新体系的大背景下,站在现代写作学的制高点上审视梳理传统,以期返本开新。他的《中国写作教育思想论纲》,挟发出历史悠久、卷秩浩繁的中国写作教育思想史中“三对矛盾”,以简要清通的文字,疏通中国写作教育思想内在脉络,勾勒其演化轨迹,收到了以简驭繁之效。作为第一部“中国写作教育思想史”,具有不可低估的学术价值和现实意义。

A Simultaneous Confidence Band for Dense Longitudinal Regression

We present a method of using local linear smoothing to construct simultaneous confidence bands for the mean function of densely spaced functional data. Our approach works well under mild conditions. In addition, the local linear estimator and its accompanying confidence band enjoy semiparametric efficiency in the sense that they are asymptotically equivalent to the counterparts obtained from the random trajectories entirely observed without errors. We illustrate the performance of the proposed confidence band through a simulation study. Furthermore, an application in food science is presented.
