On Finding and Interviewing the Needles in the Haystack: The Use of Multiplicity Sampling

A multiplicity sample of a relatively rare population—Vietnameraveterans—provides insight into the following fieldissues: yield, location problems, coverage bias, and the effectof inclusion rule, i.e., eligible kin nominators. Here, thelatter included parents, siblings, aunts and uncles. The resultantyield was double that of a conventional sample but was muchhigher for black and Mexican-American veterans than for whites.Location problems (on which there was little prior knowledge)were less serious than anticipated, requiring persistence butnot extravagant expenditures to solve. Undercoverage bias wasreduced by "nonselective" screening; this raised location cost,however. Relative yield, an indicator of selection bias, variedby kin category. Parents showed a higher relative yield thandid siblings, while aunts and uncles were strikingly low innominations relative to their numbers.     

Interest Groups and Social Movements: Self- or Public Interested? Insights from the Brazilian Third-Sector Literature

By definition, interest groups are seen as self-interested, that is, organizations established to pursue the self-interest of their members. As such, this plethora of self-interested actors has been seen largely as a negative thing, cluttering the policy process, creating unmanageable demands, and leading to iron triangles of interest group/legislative/bureaucratic networks geared toward funneling benefits to narrow groups. In contrast, social movements, nongovernmental organizations, and the like typically are seen as positive, democratizing players in public policy. This paper seeks to muddy both sides of this neat distinction by bringing the Brazilian third-sector literature and field research on scientific and professional associations in the states of Sergipe and Santa Catarina to bear on the question of the self- versus public-interested stance of third-sector groups. On the one hand, social movements can be just as self-interested as the more traditional interest groups. On the other, interest groups often act wholly in the public interest.     

COMBINED PRODUCTION AND MAINTENANCE SCHEDULING FOR A MULTIPLE‐PRODUCT,SINGLE‐ MACHINE PRODUCTION SYSTEM

Traditionally, the problems of equipment maintenance scheduling and production scheduling in a multi‐product environment have been treated independently. In this paper, we develop a Markov decision process model that simultaneously determines maintenance and production schedules for a multiple‐product, single‐machine production system, accounting for the fact that equipment condition can affect the yield of different product types differently. The problem was motivated by an application in semiconductor manufacturing. After examining structural properties of the optimal policy, we compare the combined method to an approach often used in practice. In the nearly 6,000 test problems studied, the reward from the combined method was an average of more than 25 percent greater than the reward from the traditional method.     

Non-parametric Quantile Regression with Censored Data

Abstract.  Censored regression models have received a great deal of attention in both the theoretical and applied statistics literature. Here, we consider a model in which the response variable is censored but not the covariates. We propose a new estimator of the conditional quantiles based on the local linear method, and give an algorithm for its numerical implementation. We study its asymptotic properties and evaluate its performance on simulated data sets.     

WILL RETARDING THE INFORMATION FLOW ON AUTOMOBILE RECALLS AFFECT CONSUMER DEMAND?

Recently the National Highway Traffic Administration changed its policy concerning the public announcement of safety-related automotive recalls. This paper examines whether consumers continue to use recalls as an input in their decision to purchase an automobile. It was found that over the 1977-81 period, severe recalls adversely affected the demand for the model recalled, while benefiting substitutes of other manufacturers.     

Social Work as Uncommon Sense

Summary Social work needs to resist pressures to identify itself solelyat a superficial level of common sense responses to social problems.It has to go beyond this to recognize its use of ‘uncommonsense’ as the means by which social workers cross therelationship gap and respond to their client's needs. The importanceof doing this in the early stages of relationship, as in crisisintervention, are considered, and stress is placed on holdingtogether both the explicit task-related aspect of the relationship,and the less obvious emotional interchange. By means of theiruncommon sense, social workers are enabled to reflect for, andshare with clients their areas of pain, in such a way as torender them more tolerable.     

What Must My Interest in Politics Be If I Just Told You "I Don't Know"?

How much people think they follow what's going on in governmentand public affairs depends upon the context in which they areasked the question. If asked immediately after difficult questionsabout what they know of their congressman's record, they aremuch less likely to think they pay attention to public affairsthan if they are asked, first, how interested they are in suchmatters. More important, data from two independent experimentsshow that this context effect cannot be eliminated, or significantlyreduced, by interposing a buffer of questions on unrelated topicsbetween the items that are known to affect one another. Theauthors discuss the psychological significance of these findingsand their implications for survey research.
