A Study of Some Different Concepts of Symmetry on the Real Line

Recently, different concepts of symmetry on R ⁺ such as R-symmetry, log-symmetry, and double symmetry are studied. Analogous concepts and their properties of these symmetries on R will be studied in this work. Based on skewing representation and previous studies, characterizations of double symmetry on R will be given. Among others, some interesting examples of the so-called I-symmetry, that is the analogue of log-symmetry on R, will also be presented.     

Smoothing Splines with Boundary Correction

Regular smoothing splines are known to have a type of boundary bias problem that can reduce their estimation efficiency. In this paper, a boundary corrected smoothing spline with general order is designed in a way that the risk will decay at an optimal rate. An O(n) algorithm is also developed to compute the resultant estimator efficiently.     

Clear Effects in the 2 n−p Combined Design

The technique of semifolding is used to develop the 2 ^n?p designs. Based on the initial analysis, some factors may be more important than others. In other words, the results from analyzing the original experiment may suggest a specific set of effects to be de-aliased. On the other hand, some previously acquired information might be available for specific factors. In these cases, one may desire to isolate the main effects of these factors and each of their two-factor interactions in the experiments. Four rules that are presented in this article can systematically isolate effects of potential interest, which should serve well for researchers in all disciplines. The combined design, by semifolding, provides estimates of the interactions that involve specific factors so that the alias chains of the two-factor interactions can be broken.     

Rank test statistics for umbrella alternatives

This paper proposes an optimal rank test procedure for testing an umbrella alternative when the peak of the umbrella is known. It is referred to as maximin efficient linear rank test. Also when the peak of the umbrella is unknown, a test procedure is proposed and its performance is discussed.     

A natural conjugate prior for the nonhomogeneous poisson process with an exponential intensity function

This article presents a natural conjugate prior for the nonhomogeneous Poisson process (NHPP) with an exponential intensity function, for modeling the failure rate of repairable systems. The behavior of the conjugate prior distribution with respect to its parameters is studied, and the use of this prior in Bayesian estimation is compared to two other estimation approaches (the use of independent prior distributions, and the bivariate normal distribution). The use of the conjugate prior proposed here facilitates Bayesian statistical analysis of aging. In particular, the proposed prior allows us to explicitly account for dependence between the initial failure rate and the aging rate. This is a significant improvement over the assumptions made in most prior work (either the assumption that the aging rate is known, or the assumption that the initial failure rate and the aging rate are independent). Monte Carlo simulation shows that Bayesian estimation using the proposed prior generally performs at least as well as Bayesian estimation using independent priors for the initial failure rate and the aging rate,except in the case where the prior distribution underestimates both the initial failure rate and the aging rate.     

Robust empirical likelihood for linear models under median constraints

In this paper, we consider the application of the empirical likelihood for

linear models under median constraints in view of robustness. For two simple median constraints, it is shown that conditions to ensure the consistency of the empirical likelihood confidence regions can be surprisingly relaxed compared with the normal approach under L norm. However, the coverage accuracy of the empirical likelihood confidence regions based on simple median constrains cannot be improved because of the discontinuity of the constraints. Therefore, a smoothed version of median constraint is proposed and a general theory is established to ensure its validity.     

ASSOCIATIONS BETWEEN AIR POLLUTION AND HOSPITAL VISITS FOR CARDIOVASCULAR DISEASES IN THE ELDERLY IN SYDNEY USING BAYESIAN STATISTICAL METHODS

Using generalized linear models (GLMs), Jalaludin  et al. (2006;  J. Exposure Analysis and Epidemiology   16 , 225–237) studied the association between the daily number of visits to emergency departments for cardiovascular disease by the elderly (65+) and five measures of ambient air pollution. Bayesian methods provide an alternative approach to classical time series modelling and are starting to be more widely used. This paper considers Bayesian methods using the dataset used by Jalaludin  et al.  (2006) , and compares the results from Bayesian methods with those obtained by Jalaludin  et al.  (2006) using GLM methods.     

Characterizations based on conditional expectations

For given real functionsg andh, first we give necessary and sufficient conditions such that there exists a random variableX satisfying thatE(g(X)|X≥y)=h(y)r _x (y),∀y ∈ C _x , whereC _x andT _X are the support and the failure rate function ofX, respectively. These extend the results of Ruiz and Navarro (1994) and Ghitany et al. (1995). Next we investigate necessary and sufficient conditions such thath(y)=E(g(X)|X≥y), for a given functionh.
