Factors shaping activists’ perceptions of corporate organizations: An empirical case from South Korea

The current study aims to explore the factors that shape activists’ perceptions of corporate organizations. This study administered the survey method to examine how activists perceive corporate operations and reputation in South Korea. The three factors that directed how the activist groups perceived the corporate sector are “corporate social responsibility,” “internal corporate culture,” “and “the extent of corporate openness.” Factor analysis showed that the activist groups used these criteria when they evaluate corporate reputation.     

Who Wants to be a Social Worker? Using Routine Published Data to Identify Trends in the Numbers of People Applying for and Completing Social Work Programmes in England

Despite widely reported problems with recruitment and retention,there is surprisingly little published research investigatingthe numbers of people wishing to enter social work and theirdemographic characteristics. This article uses routinely collectedpublished higher education data and reports produced by theGeneral Social Care Council (GSCC) and its predecessor the CentralCouncil Education for Education and Training in Social Work(CCETSW) to look at recent trends in the numbers of people wishingto become social workers. It argues that information on theoverall numbers of people applying each year is less helpfulthan understanding more about which groups are under-representedin social work and why. It also draws attention to some positiveindicators, such as the comparative success of social work inattracting groups who may currently be under-represented inhigher education. In addition to suggesting that we need toknow more about the numbers and types of people applying tobe social workers, it concludes that additional work is requiredin establishing employment patterns among the social work workforceas a whole. For example, a high proportion of newly qualifiedsocial workers take up paid employment in social work, but littleis known about what happens to them at later stages of theircareer.     

Fostering Children and Young People on Remand: Care or Control?

Remand foster-carers can provide placements for children andyoung people awaiting trial or sentence within criminal courts.The role of fostering children and young people on remand isin some ways more complex than fostering other children, asremand foster-carers have to bridge the divide between providingthe care of the welfare system and the control of the criminaljustice system. This paper considers the ways in which a smallsample of remand foster-carers attempted to manage these tensionsand incongruities and tried to reach a balance between careand control. The paper identifies two main ‘parenting’approaches adopted by remand foster-carers, and comments onthe appropriateness of each to meet the needs of children andyoung people on remand, whilst still achieving the requirementsof the criminal justice system.     

Community Partnerships: Integrating Early Education with Childcare

This study reports on research into a Local Authority initiative in York, in North Yorkshire which aimed to establish early education and childcare partnerships between its 51 primary schools and local early‐years providers from the community‐voluntary and private sectors in close geographical proximity to the schools. The initiative was named Shared Foundation Community Partnerships.     

THE FAMILY THERAPIST'S GUIDE TO PSYCHOPHARMACOLOGY: A GRADUATE LEVEL COURSE

Although medication has not traditionally been part of the family therapist's venue, family therapists have recently begun to consider medication as a treatment option. The increasing success of pharmacologic interventions and the widespread use of the biopsychosocial model have resulted in a new openness to the possibility of psychopharmacology although significant controversy still remains. A curriculum for a graduate level course in pharmacology for family therapists is outlines. The three components of the course are (a) specific pharmacology content; (b) the context of psychopharmacology, including how to access psychiatric resources; and (c) meta-isssues dealing primarily with political and economic concerns.     

‘A Place of Our Own'? Teenage Mothers’ Views on Housing Needs and Support Models

Since 2003, government policy has required local authorities to provide support when they house lone teenage parents seeking accommodation. This qualitative study addresses young mothers’ routes into housing need and their experiences of housing access and support, drawing on interview and focus group data collected in 2003. The findings emphasise mothers’ preferences for forms of support which facilitate moves towards increased choice and independence. Reinforcing messages from other research, these findings also show a gap between concepts of ‘support’ embodied in government policy and those which inform practice, within agencies and among young people. © 2006 The Author(s). Best practices in board governance: Evidence from South Carolina

In June 2003, a large‐scale survey was conducted among South Carolina nonprofit agencies to gather information on a range of board governance issues. Some of the survey questions dealt with how each agency's board contributes to the organization. More than 80 percent of the responding agencies were registered as 501(c)(3), with the largest number of respondents in the human services category. Statistical analysis reveals where actual roles differ from “best practices” as prescribed in the literature. Discussion then focuses on how these trends in governance affect management and operations. In particular, we look at best practice regarding the separation of board and staff duties.
