In sickness and in health: A qualitative study of elderly men who care for wives with dementia

It is estimated that approximately 1,000,000 elderly men care for spouses with Alzheimer's disease or other forms of cognitive impairment, yet we have only a limited understanding of their work, and central questions arise. What do men caregivers do, and what meanings do they ascribe to their work? What are their distinctive strengths and vulnerabilities, and what can we learn about men and caregiving from their stories? This qualitative study was based on in-depth, open-ended interviews with 14 elderly men who are primary caregivers to wives with dementia. All interviews were taped, transcribed, and manually coded. The resulting information then underwent analysis from which three major themes emerged: feelings of isolation and invisibility of their care work, a style of caregiving that jointly utilizes management and nurturing, and feelings of commitment, responsibility, and devotion.

Integrating skill acquisition and perspective taking capacity in the development of leaders

This essay integrates approaches from three literatures to develop a model of leader development. Kanfer and Ackerman's (1989) episodic model of skill acquisition is combined with Kegan's approach to adult development to encompass development of transactional and transformational leadership. Importantly, feedback mechanisms are added to explain changes in individuals'intellectual capacities, values, and beliefs over time. This framework provides a summary of what is known about the processes underlying developmental change in how leaders understand and act on their environment and provides specific directions for future research.     

Is there a generalized energy conservation ethic? A comparison of the determinants of gasoline and home heating energy conservation

The body of research that has attempted to identify and characterize the “ecologically concerned” or “socially responsible” consumer is challenged for its assumption that this is a single group sharing a general disposition to conserve. Based on a comparison of gasoline and home heating energy conservers from a single sample, evidence is provided that these are two unique groups and that those who are conservers in both areas form a third unique group that is closer to the original notion of a generalized conservation ethic. Implications are discussed for future research focusing on energy conservation and social responsibility.     

Markov chain Monte Carlo methods for family trees using a parallel processor

A 1024 CPU parallel computer is used to obtain simulated genotypes in the Tristan da Cunha pedigree using random local updating methods. A four-colour theorem is invoked to justify simultaneous updating. Multiple copies of the program are run simultaneously. These results are used to infer the source of the B allele of the ABO blood group that is present in the population.     

The Accreditation of the Skills of Overseas Trained Workers

The recognition of overseas qualifications in Australia continues to be a major problem experienced by migrants, either through a lack of adequate verifiable documentation, difficulties in determining parity with local qualifications, or through problems associated with accrediting experience subsequent to basic training. Rather than the valuation of formal paper qualifications, it is suggested that the skills currently held by the migrant be assessed. The assessment of skills is a more productive and equitable model and should be developed, especially in the context of a dynamic labour market and of a greater emphasis being placed on skills in Australia's immigration policy.     

HEALTH CARE REFORM IN THE UNITED STATES: IMPLICATIONS FOR TRAINING AND PRACTICE IN MARRIAGE AND FAMILY THERAPY

Americans are spending 12-14% of their income on health care, and costs are rising about 11-12% per year. These increases are fueled by many social problems and are not limited strictly to health matters. Many alternatives have been examined to limit the rapidly increasing costs. The long-term results of these efforts are likely to be a reduction in health care benefits for many and the continued development of a two-tier system of health care. This article addresses the place of mental health care in general and marriage and family therapy in particular in the emerging system. Suggestions for training and practice for the new health care system are given.
