Social Amplification of Wildfire Risk: The Role of Social Interactions and Information Sources 总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2

Wildfire is a persistent and growing threat across much of the western United States. Understanding how people living in fire‐prone areas perceive this threat is essential to the design of effective risk management policies. Drawing on the social amplification of risk framework, we develop a conceptual model of wildfire risk perceptions that incorporates the social processes that likely shape how individuals in fire‐prone areas come to understand this risk, highlighting the role of information sources and social interactions. We classify information sources as expert or nonexpert, and group social interactions according to two dimensions: formal versus informal, and generic versus fire‐specific. Using survey data from two Colorado counties, we empirically examine how information sources and social interactions relate to the perceived probability and perceived consequences of a wildfire. Our results suggest that social amplification processes play a role in shaping how individuals in this area perceive wildfire risk. A key finding is that both “vertical” (i.e., expert information sources and formal social interactions) and “horizontal” (i.e., nonexpert information and informal interactions) interactions are associated with perceived risk of experiencing a wildfire. We also find evidence of perceived “risk interdependency”—that is, homeowners’ perceptions of risk are higher when vegetation on neighboring properties is perceived to be dense. Incorporating social amplification processes into community‐based wildfire education programs and evaluating these programs’ effectiveness constitutes an area for future inquiry. 相似文献

Gay men living with HIV/AIDS face a complex of health issues, including those associated with the aging process, long-term HIV infection (25 years or more), and side effects from Highly Active Anti-Retroviral Therapy (HAART). If aging can increase marginalization, this is more likely for the aging HIV positive gay man, who is already marginalized for being queer and living with a stigmatizing disease. This article presents findings from a study of a long-running HIV support group. It locates the members, all gay men living with HIV, in a specific historical and political context to explore how feelings of loss and the struggle to sustain community affect long-term survivors and other older HIV+ gay men. We identify specific challenges presented by aging for men who contracted HIV early in the epidemic, contrasting them with those faced by men infected with the virus later in life. While both groups appear to struggle with a vision of what life could have been, had AIDS not forced loss and change, they also celebrate the community their shared plight has enabled. 相似文献

This study used path analysis to examine the relationship between perceived barriers, acculturation, and role model influence on the career self‐efficacy and career considerations of a sample of Hispanic women. Two path models were examined. The male‐dominated model accounted for 15% of the variance, and the female‐dominated model accounted for 26% of the variance. No relationship was found between the variables of interest and male‐dominated career self‐efficacy and consideration. However, perceived barriers were related to female‐dominated career consideration and Anglo acculturation significantly contributed to female‐dominated career self‐efficacy. Economists have long recognized that occupations can be used as proxies for skills in wage regressions. Yet the potential
existence of non-market factors such as discrimination and occupational choice (sorting) on the basis of job attributes that
are separate from, but potentially correlated with, wages makes occupations an imperfect control for skills. In this paper,
we consider whether inter-occupational wage differentials that are unexplained by measured human capital are indeed due to
differences in unmeasured skill. Using the National Compensation Survey, a large, nationally-representative dataset on jobs
and ten different components of job requirements, we compare the effects on residual wage variation of including occupation
indicators and these skill requirements measures. We find that although these skill requirements vary across 3-digit occupations,
occupation indicators decrease wage residuals by far more than can be explained by skill alone. This indicates that “controlling
for occupation” does not equate to controlling for only these skill measures, but also for other factors. Additionally, we
find that there is considerable within-occupation variation in skill requirements, and that the amount of variation is not
constant across skill levels. As a result, including occupation indicators in a wage model introduces heteroskedasticity that
must be accounted for. We suggest that caution be applied when using and interpreting occupation indicators as controls in
