Diagnostic tests for bias of estimating equations in weighted regression with missing covariates

The authors propose two tests, one parametric and the other semiparametric, for testing bias of estimating equations in weighted regression with partially missing covariates when the primary regression model is correctly specified. More generally, the proposed tests may be thought of as a diagnostic tool for the combined package of the primary regression model and the missingness assumptions. The asymptotic null distributions of the two test statistics are derived under the assumption of missingness at random for the partially missing covariates. A small scale simulation study completes the work.     

Applying the social model in practice: some lessons from countryside recreation

This paper draws on the researcher's experiences as a countryside access advisor in exploring some of the ways that social model ideas can influence the development of organizational policy and practice in mainstream settings. It argues that, in seeking to influence the development of more inclusive policies and practices, disability studies needs to look for new ways of engaging with diverse audiences of practitioners who are used to operating within an individual model of disability, and who may therefore see no immediate organizational advantages to adopting social model principles in their work. This evolutionary process demands in particular that we work constantly towards finding new, more accessible, ways of explaining social model ideas to mainstream audiences. Thus, in a social climate that continues to tolerate disabled people's oppression, disability studies has a key role to play in demonstrating to theorists, policy-makers and practitioners why and how social model ideas can support the move towards inclusion.     

Envy in the transference and countertransference

This article defines envy and describes the various ways in which it may manifest itself, pointing out that there may be positive as well as negative effects of envy. These concepts are then applied to the psychotherapeutic situation, and the effects of envy in the transference, and particularly the countertransference, are discussed. Finally a case presentation demonstrates how the therapist's recognition and understanding of envy in the countertransference were used in a positive way and helped the therapy to proceed in a more productive direction.     

Social Quality: A Way to Measure the Quality of Society

In this paper we suggest a way to measure the well-being of society based upon our own development of the Social Quality model. The Social Quality model has the advantage of being sociologically grounded as a measure of the well-being of society and the individuals within it. We test our model of Social Quality against life satisfaction as an indicator of how successful it is in delivering these aspirations. The model was tested on all European countries using the European Quality of Life Surveys in 2003 and 2007 and was found to explain a large amount of variance, which was consistent across time and space. We suggest that it is possible to operationalise this model using small number of variables, ones that are frequently used in comparative surveys and this should enable the quality of society to be measured in a parsimonious and effective way.
