Population movement in Zhejiang province,China: the impact of government policies

"China's urbanization policies include strict control of permanent migration to large cities, but encourage the growth of small cities and towns. Concurrently, temporary migration is widely permitted as a way to stimulate commerce. Data for Zhejiang province indicate that permanent mobility is largely directed toward urban places, that towns gain more than cities and that rural areas experience migration losses. Permanent migrants to urban places are selective of the better educated. Temporary migration is also urban directed but greater in volume than permanent migration, and places considerable strain on urban infrastructure. Government policies are a key to understanding the migration streams and migrant characteristics. The considerable net movement into cities suggests that strict control of city growth is more difficult to achieve than envisaged by policymakers." This is a revised version of a paper originally presented at the 1989 Annual Meeting of the Population Association of America (see Population Index, Vol. 55, No. 3, Fall 1989, p. 386).     

“Why are you trying to destroy the last good thing men have?” Understanding resistance to women in combat jobs

This article argues that opposition to expansion of women's roles in the US military and peer armed forces, particularly into combat-related military occupational specialties, is based on defending a means of proving masculinity and preserving access to power. Research is based on policies of US, UK, and other NATO countries, public statements made by officials, academic articles, and interviews with current and former members of the US military. The article examines shifting definitions of combat, historical examples of American women’s military service, and common and persistent themes of resistance to women in combat roles. The article argues that resistance to women in combat roles is not only inconsistent with operational realities, but is both counterproductive to mission effectiveness, and may even put lives at risk. The article concludes that in an ever-shifting security environment requiring critical thinking, cross-cultural communication, and civil–military collaboration, rethinking gender roles may be advantageous.     

School league tables: what can they really tell us?

School league tables are eagerly scanned by parents hoping to find the best school for their child, and by teachers hoping to see their school rise in the rankings. But do they tell parents what they need to know? Harvey Goldstein and George Leckie argue that league tables are not fit for that purpose, and say it is time that their publication should cease.     

Editor's Notes

Two examples are given that illustrate the Gauss–Markov theorem. The examples will help students appreciate the use of the word best in connection with the term BLUE (best linear unbiased estimator). The examples will also provide several instructive exercises.     

It Takes a Village to Deliver and Test Child and Family-Focused Services

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this article is to highlight the benefits of collaboration in child focused mental health services research. METHOD: Three unique research projects are described. These projects address the mental health needs of vulnerable, urban, minority children and their families. In each one, service delivery was codesigned, interventions were co-delivered and a team of stakeholders collaboratively tested the impact of each one. RESULTS: The results indicate that the three interventions designed, delivered, and tested are associated with reductions in youth mental health symptoms. CONCLUSION: These interventions are feasible alternatives to traditional individualized outpatient treatment.     

On a test of independence for contingency tables

Using the concept of distributional distance, a test statistic is proposed FOR the hypothesis of independence in multidimensional contingency tables. A Monte Carlo Study is done to empirically compare the power of the proposed test to the Pearson x² and the likelihood ratio test- Further, the nonnull distribution under various spike alternatives is tabulated     

A Computer-Assisted Analysis of Input,Process, and Output of a Social Work Educational Program

This paper describes how a computer may be used to provide repetitive data on a year-by-year basis on three sets of variables. First is input into the educational process (student characteristics); second is the throughput or students’ reactions to the educational process (grades, motivation, class participation, quality and quantity of work, etc.); third is output (the reactions of graduates to content taught, the kinds of jobs they have and success at these). In addition the computer can indicate what relations exist between various pairs of variables with implications for student selection and curriculum development.
