LOG-LINEAR MODELS FOR MEAN AND DISPERSION IN MIXED POISSON REGRESSION MODELS

This paper is concerned with the analysis of repeated measures count data overdispersed relative to a Poisson distribution, with the overdispersion possibly heterogeneous. To accommodate the overdispersion, the Poisson random variable is compounded with a gamma random variable, and both the mean of the Poisson and the variance of the gamma are modelled using log linear models. Maximum likelihood estimates (MLE) are then obtained. The paper also gives extended quasi-likelihood estimates for a more general class of compounding distributions which are shown to be approximations to the MLEs obtained for the gamma case. The theory is illustrated by modelling the determination of asbestos fibre intensity on membrane filters mounted on microscope slides.

DOING THERAPY: A POST-STRUCTURAL RE-VISION*

The purpose of this essay is to develop a way to look at doing therapy based on (a) Wittgenstein's concept of “language game”; (b) the relationship between Wittgenstein's “private language” argument, language games, and constructivism; and (c) post-structural thinking about language, how therapy works within language, and how language works within therapy. Case material is used to illustrate the usefulness of this approach.     

Etiological patterns of child abuse and neglect

A review of the various etiological possibilities for child abuse and neglect, designed to offer an additional and different possibility. Consideration is first given to problems, namely the lack of universal definition, heterogeneous effects, and retrospective research. The probability of multifactor models is noted, and sexual abuse is given separate consideration, followed by an exploration of the existing models termed ecological, transactional, transitional, and attachment. An interactive aggression model is then offered as the new possibility. Empirical evidence for cultural and/or ethnic predispositions suggests that society can be a supporting or inhibiting factor in terms of promoting or opposing violence.
