AIDS, Sexuality and African American Adolescent Females

Many African American adolescent females do not have sufficient information to break the cycle of unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases, in a society where we are bombarded from dusk to dawn with sexually explicit images. Knowledge alone does not change behavior, but it does provide the basis for decisions that promote sexual health. Adolescents are too often driven by curiosity and pressure to perform sexually. The ability to make the right decisions about sex is a skill that develops slowly throughout life. However, teens are impulsive and possess an attitude of invincibility. Youth cannot rely on the community to educate them about the dangers of unprotected sex. The African American community has never welcomed the topic of sexuality into our homes. Presently, the age old tradition of telling youth what they should and should not do without giving them the specific information about sex or sexual behavior continues. Prevention must be strongly emphasized. Schools must play role in the war against irresponsible sexual behavior and AIDS. This paper will describe an innovative group project designed to educate African American female teens about sexuality in an urban school setting. The topic of sex generated confusing and powerful feelings that were expressed in the group. Group members learned how to protect themselves, nurture themselves and value themselves. The goal of the group was to impart knowledge, change risky behaviors, validate their existence and listen to their stories.     

Executive Information Systems: Recent Developments and Research Imperatives

SUMMARY The reluctance of top managers to use computers themselves has become almost legendary, although there are good reasons for their apparent preference for traditional information sources and access routes. Isolated cases have shown how computer-based executive support systems can be used by top managers when great care is taken by the system developers over data presentation and the user interface. Now, the advent of high quality commercial software means that Executive Information Systems (EIS) may become far more widespread. This paper describes the principal features of the new EIS from the executive users' point of view and indicates those characteristics which appear to be most conducive to success. Research directions which will identify the extent and impact of EIS software on top management are identified.

Growing up Without Status: The Integration of Children in Mixed‐Status Families

Over the past three decades, a central new challenge confronting millions of children of immigrants has emerged: growing up in a mixed‐status family in which at least one member lacks legal authorization to live and work in the United States. A body of recent research argues that unauthorized immigrant status is the fundamental determinant of integration for unauthorized immigrants, with intergenerational consequences for their U.S.‐born children. We discuss the immigration and other policies that create the particular social context within which unauthorized immigration status becomes so detrimental for integration. Specifically, we focus on federal and state policies that undermine the very factors thought to protect children and support the integration of new generations of Americans: families and social networks, economic resources and opportunities, and health. We conclude with recommendations for future research.

Participatory ergonomic intervention for prevention of low back pain: assembly line redesign case

This paper gives an overview of a participatory ergonomic intervention aimed at reducing low back pain cases in the dispatch department of a catalogue and e-commerce retail company. Based on the findings of the ergonomic analysis and design committee, the company's own employees redesigned the assembly line's layout. As a result of these changes two job tasks that involved manual material handling of boxes, identified by the revised NIOSH equation as posing an increased risk for lifting-related low back pain, were totally eliminated, and the employees responsible for moving boxes from the end of the assembly line to pallets on the ground were given more control over their jobs, and these jobs were also enriched with a new, less heavy task. These results demonstrate that participatory ergonomic interventions are a viable and effective strategy to reduce the exposure to work-related physical and psychosocial risk factors for low back pain.
