Studies have shown that the emotional impact of mergers influences employees' attitudes to change as well as more distal post-merger outcomes such as job satisfaction, organizational commitment and withdrawal. Understanding the role of emotions during mergers can therefore provide insights into why major change produces varying outcomes. This study presents findings from a qualitative study examining the emotional impact of a merger between two banking institutions on managers in Brunei. The distinctive national culture representing a fusion of Malay and Islamic values was found to influence the emotional impact of this merger. These values place less emphasis on personal control as a means for dealing with uncertainty. The findings suggest that Western transactional models of perceived control to explain how people manage change may have far more limited application within a Bruneian context.  相似文献

Safety culture is an important concept in understanding the involvement of organizations in accidents and as a tool in safety management. British Rail, the public sector company which ran the UK railway network until its privatization in April 1994, was criticized for its 'poor safety culture' following a major accident at Clapham Junction, London, in 1988, in which 35 lives were lost. Studies conducted after the accident have demonstrated that deficiencies in the organization's safety culture may be related to workers' negative perceptions of managers' commitment to safety. These perceptions underlie a lack of mutual trust between staff and managers, which has implications for the fostering of open and honest communications within the network, and for the development of a positive safety culture. Communication problems are likely to be compounded by the privatization of British Rail, which has involved the fragmentation of the network, with different bodies responsible for infrastructure maintenance and train operation. The repercussions of privatizing the railway network are discussed in the context of safety culture research.  相似文献

The most popular and perhaps universal estimator of location and scale in robust estimation, where the population is normal with possible small departures, is Huber's Proposal‐2 M‐estimator. This paper gives the first‐order small sample bias correction for the scale estimator, verifying the calculation through theory and simulation. Other ways of reducing small sample bias, say by jackknifing or bootstrapping, can be computationally intensive, and would not be routinely used with this iteratively derived estimator. It is suggested that bias‐reduced estimates of scale are most useful when forming confidence intervals for location and/or scale based on the asymptotic distribution.  相似文献

Studies in the 1980s and 1990s revealed that financial arrangements in marriage tended to disadvantage women, especially those with young children. However, much of that research focused upon relatively well‐established married (or remarried) couples, and we have little insight into the choices that today's newly‐weds are making, or what influences their choices. To address this gap in our understanding, in‐depth, semi‐structured interviews were conducted with forty‐two heterosexual couples on the brink of their first marriage. We explored their monetary practices and the way that they thought about money in the relationship. The results of a grounded theory analysis showed that six couples were pooling all or most of their money, fifteen were using a partial‐pooling system, twenty were using an independent management system (with separate accounts), and one couple had an arrangement where all the money was controlled and managed by one partner. A key factor was perceived ownership of money, and this influenced the extent to which finances were being merged and treated as a collective resource. Other factors included the couple's current living arrangements and beliefs about the importance of sharing and independence within the relationship.  相似文献

The 'Social Model' in various forms is currently the dominant model for researching disability, addressing disability from within a socio-political framework that draws substantially on a 'social constructionist' perspective.
