The Importance of Being Agnes

Harold Garfinkel's 1950s case study of “Agnes” is broadly understood as the locus classicus of sociological research about transgender people. Drawing on an analysis of unpublished archival materials from Garfinkel and Robert J. Stoller, the lead psychiatrist on Agnes's case, I locate Agnes' experiences at UCLA within a larger history of theorizing about gender and sexuality within the social sciences, and within the emerging field of transgender studies.     

Understanding Contemporary Homelessness: Issues of Definition and Meaning

There is little agreement in the recent academic literature about how the concept of homelessness should be defined. This is more than just a theoretical problem, because it becomes difficult to urge governments to meet the needs of homeless people, if the parameters of the homeless population are unclear. This paper reviews ‘conservative’, ‘radical’ and ‘conventional’ perspectives on homelessness in modern society, and it argues that it is possible to adjudicate between them. The paper proposes a socially constructed definition of homelessness based on the notion of minimum community standards. It argues that this culturally relative position provides a theoretically meaningful framework for understanding homelessness in the 1990s.     

THE EFFECTIVENESS OF FAMILY THERAPY IN THE TREATMENT OF ADOLESCENTS WITH CONDUCT DISORDERS AND DELINQUENCY

A literature review was conducted on recent studies using family therapy approaches to the treatment of conduct disorders in adolescents. Results from studies conducted since the Shadish et al. (1993) meta-analysis on the effects of family and marital therapies are included. Barriers to effective treatment are identified, costs of care are discussed, and a variety of systems of care in which family interventions are embedded are reviewed.     

Using social norms theory to explain perceptions and sexual health behaviors of undergraduate college students: an exploratory study

The authors and associates conducted a social norms-based intervention targeting high-risk sexual behaviors among undergraduate students at 4 college campuses. Social norms theory predicts that widely held misperceptions may encourage risky behavior in a misguided attempt to conform to perceived norms and that information correcting these misperceptions will lead to a decrease in such behaviors. Students overestimated their peers' levels of sexual activity, numbers of partners, incidence of sexually transmitted infections, and rates of unintended pregnancies, but underestimated rates of condom use. Rates of HIV test taking, however, were accurately estimated. Although some components of sexual risk behaviors lend themselves well to social norms-based interventions, others, specifically inconsistent condom use and avoiding HIV tests, do not. Although no changes in reported beliefs or practices were apparent at the end of a 9-month intervention period, longer or modified interventions may be needed to make a fair assessment of the efficacy of this approach.

Religious Involvement and Physical Functioning among Older Mexican Americans

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Examine the association between attendance at religious services and incidence of ADL disability over a period of seven years among older Mexican Americans 65 years and older. METHODS: Using data from the Hispanic Established Population for the Epidemiological Study of the Elderly (H-EPESE), logistic generalized estimation equation (GEE) models were used to analyze the contribution of attendance at religious services to the differences in incidence of ADL disability over seven years, controlling for demographics, medical conditions, and physical mobility. RESULTS: Frequent attendees at religious services had 30% lower odds of developing ADL disability over seven years compared to the non-regular attendance group. The odds were reduced to 23%, but remained significant when physical and mental health were controlled. CONCLUSIONS: In this older Mexican American population, regular attendees at religious services were less likely to develop ADL disability over a period of seven years compared to those who attended services less often.
