This article explores the phenomenon of returning to Orthodoxy among Jewish women who have immigrated to Israel. The focus of the article is the effect of this return on their self-identity as they assume a new social position. The sample consists of 72 respondents to an exhaustive questionnaire. The results reported here suggest the difficulty of maintaining prior relationships, resulting in the marginalization of some of these women. The physiognomic distinctions between spontaneous enjoyment smiles and deliberate non-enjoyment smiles provide the social
perceiver with a functional, accessible source of information to help regulate social interaction. Two experiments were performed
to investigate whether perceivers were sensitive to this information in a contextually meaningful manner. In Experiment 1,
participants were asked to judge whether a target individual was happy or not. The results revealed that participants were
indeed sensitive to the differences between enjoyment and non-enjoyment smiles. In Experiment 2, participants performed a
priming task without any specific instruction to judge emotional state. Neutral expressions, non-enjoyment smiles and enjoyment
smiles were employed as primes in a word valence identification task. The results demonstrated a clear trend indicative of
perceiver sensitivity. When compared to a the baseline condition of a neutral expression prime, enjoyment but not non-enjoyment
smiles facilitated identification of positive words.

This study sought to examine the family environments of a sample of Hispanic women who reported childhood sexual abuse. Eighteen women, taken from a larger college sample, were individually interviewed and administered the Family Environment Scale (FES; Moos & Moos, 1994). Cultural values and the relationship of family characteristics to the individual's experience of sexual abuse were explored. The abused women obtained significantly higher scores on the Achievement-Orientation subscale of the FES than the normative group. Qualitative data revealed some patterns in these families regarding sexual discussions and poor conflict resolution skills. Implications for treatment of Hispanic victims are discussed. 相似文献

Smiling individuals are usually perceived more favorably than non-smiling ones—they are judged as happier, more attractive, competent, and friendly. These seemingly clear and obvious consequences of smiling are assumed to be culturally universal, however most of the psychological research is carried out in WEIRD societies (Western, Educated, Industrialized, Rich, and Democratic) and the influence of culture on social perception of nonverbal behavior is still understudied. Here we show that a smiling individual may be judged as less intelligent than the same non-smiling individual in cultures low on the GLOBE’s uncertainty avoidance dimension. Furthermore, we show that corruption at the societal level may undermine the prosocial perception of smiling—in societies with high corruption indicators, trust toward smiling individuals is reduced. This research fosters understanding of the cultural framework surrounding nonverbal communication processes and reveals that in some cultures smiling may lead to negative attributions. 相似文献

Internationally, children's participation in leisure activities, including sport, is considered to be of such importance that it is enshrined as a human right. However, there is a growing awareness that children's experience of sport is not always benign; abuse and harm frequently occur within a broad range of organised sport contexts. This systematic literature review examines the international research evidence from both peer reviewed and grey literature on the abuse and harm of children that can occur in sport. Four areas of focus were apparent in this literature: first, types of abuse encountered by children in sport and the harm caused to them; second, persons responsible for the abuse and harm; third, circumstances under which children may be most vulnerable; and fourth, the role that culture plays in facilitating abuse in sport. Children's reports about their play in middle childhood and the emotions they associate with play have received limited research attention. Using focus groups, this study asked 38 children in the UK about what, where and with whom they played. They were also asked how play made them feel. Children reported a wide range of play behaviours, with outdoor and traditional games being just as prominently mentioned as play with electronic devices. The emotional importance of play in middle childhood was apparent, with children associating play with strong positive emotions, and not being able to play with negative emotions and anxiety. 相似文献
