Advantages and disadvantages of pregnancy and contraception: Teenagers' perceptions

Research has shown that teenagers' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of pregnancy and contraception are significant predictors of pregnancy risk taking. This analysis examines the content and determinants of these cost-benefit sets, using data from 425 sexually active adolescents. The results indicate that teens' perceptions of the advantages and disadvantages of pregnancy and contraception are neither strongly nor systematically related to each other. Moreover, the determinants of the four cost-benefit sets are varied, although there is some overlap between sets. Explanations of these findings and implications for future research and for the delivery of family planning services to teenagers are suggested.The authors names are listed alphabetically. Supervision with volunteers in social workWhile professional supervisors are increasingly requested to work with volunteers, the widening scope of application evokes specific problems to both supervisors and volunteers. This article is supposed to carry forward the preceding article in OSC 2/05. The author describes the special features of voluntary service by example of ambulant hospice work and relates them to the setting of supervision. It becomes evident, that it is necessary to modify and extend the roles of the supervisor in order to work successfully. The author emphasizes the adequate choice of methodic repertoire. In many respects psychodramatic supervision is suited particularly for the work with volunteers.

Coming full circle? Forging missing links along Nike's integrated production networks

Abstract ‘Global’ corporations are being held accountable for conditions at sites of production, formerly the domains of their foreign contractors. This shift was exemplified when consumers in Nike's largest markets began replacing the excitement of the latest pair of Nike shoes with a question: ‘Should I be wearing Nike shoes?’ With existing analytical tools, we cannot comprehensively answer this question. To do so, we need a more complete picture of international production networks, their interrelationships among agents and their geographies. The use of an integrated production network that links consumption and production analyses and place‐based conditions accomplishes this goal. This integrative approach allows for more thorough investigations of firm networks, the regions where they interact, the labour upon which they depend, and the consumers that influence their behaviour. Furthermore, investigating ‘feedback loops’ between these facets provides a means of understanding how reforms along production networks are mediated.

Supervision with volunteers in social workWhat have professional supervisors to consider when working with volunteers? Professional supervision with volunteers involves a basic tension. It can be regarded as a specific field where volunteer and professional ?cultures“ meet together — sometimes even collide. Common concepts of supervision with professionals cannot be transferred one-to-one in the work with volunteers. We have to consider the specific features of the field as well as methodical strategies and supervisory role-taking. The author reflects on the fundamental characteristics of volunteer work, the basic motivation of those who are engaged in it, their specific group-mentality and applies this to the setting of supervision.
