To ask about gender justice presupposes an explanation of the concept of justice itself. We notice that the concept of justice has historical and systematical definite structural elements which make it possible to analyze equality in comparison with difference. The observation of distortional effects (gender bias) is necessary for the distinction between relevant and irrelevant differences between genders. Finally, as an example, two instances of injustice between genders will be considered, namely profession biographies of women and men and their social consequences and the discussion about gender related income differences (gender pay gap).     

Was hat Carl Rogers Wirtschaftsinformatikern im Zeitalter des Internet zu sagen? Studie zur Einführung der Lehrveranstaltung „Personzentrierte Kommunikation” an der Universität Wien

The increasing influence of the Internet on higher education evokes the question: What effects will this cause? We employ new media in order to supplant traditional lecturing by intensive interaction among all participants. This shall lead to more motivation and deeper, more significant learning involving the whole person. In this article we share our experience in designing and facilitating a course called ?Person Centered Communication” targeted at exposing business informatics students to the Person Centered Approach. We offer a mix of theory, exercises, self experience, various online-reflection processes such as reaction sheets, self-evaluation, team-assignments, and peer-evaluation of the cooperative elaboration of a self-chosen theme in the scope of Person-Centered Communication. The current study follows an extended action research methodology and encompasses the motivation, planning, performing, evaluation, and learning from our experience. The main result was that whereas the encounter groups were perceived as highly challenging, students unanimously agreed to have profited a lot for their future job and private lives. They mentioned that the online reflections provided complementary means to deepen their experiences and to get into contact with themselves.     

'But she didn't say no': an exploration of sibling sexual abuse

Sibling sexual abuse often causes polarities of view in professional and client groups alike. These views range from seeing it as benign to damaging. For professionals new to the field this paper gives an overview of the discussion that sibling sexual abuse is as traumatic as parental sexual abuse, and has lasting impact on its victims. Recognising the particular dynamics of sibling sexual abuse and effect on victims raises the challenge of case management in families where it occurs. This paper will explore this challenge within the New South Wales context.     

Predicting hospital census using time series regression methods

We first describe the time series modeling problem in a general way. Then some specific assumptions and observations which are pertinent to the application of these models are made. We next propose a specific approach to the modeling problem, one which yields efficient, easily calculated estimators of all parameters (under the stated assumptions). Finally, the technique is applied to the problem of modeling the census of a particular hospital.     

Non-linear state space modelling of fisheries biomass dynamics by using Metropolis-Hastings within-Gibbs sampling

State space modelling and Bayesian analysis are both active areas of applied research in fisheries stock assessment. Combining these two methodologies facilitates the fitting of state space models that may be non-linear and have non-normal errors, and hence it is particularly useful for modelling fisheries dynamics. Here, this approach is demonstrated by fitting a non-linear surplus production model to data on South Atlantic albacore tuna ( Thunnus alalunga ). The state space approach allows for random variability in both the data (the measurement of relative biomass) and in annual biomass dynamics of the tuna stock. Sampling from the joint posterior distribution of the unobservables was achieved by using Metropolis-Hastings within-Gibbs sampling.     

Using an approximate L1 Estimator

This note investigates the efficiency of using near-best or approximate L₁ estimators as starting values in L₁ linear programming procedures. In particular, it is shown that the total computer time can often be reduced if one first computes the least squares estimator, β, and then adjust y to y - Xβ in Barrodale and Roberts’ improved algorithm.
