This study shows how Old Order Amish and ultra-Orthodox women’s discourse about television can help develop a better understanding of the creation, construction, and strengthening of limits and boundaries separating enclave cultures from the world. Based on questionnaires containing both closed- and open-ended questions completed by 82 participants, approximately half from each community, I argue that both communities can be understood as interpretive communities that negatively interpret not only television content, like other religious communities, but also the medium itself. Their various negative interpretive strategies is discussed and the article shows how they are part of an “us-versus-them” attitude created to mark the boundaries and walls that enclave cultures build around themselves. The comparison between the two communities found only a few small differences but one marked similarity: The communities perceive avoidance of a tool for communication, in this case television, as part of the communities’ sharing, participation, and common culture.  相似文献

This study explored the ways in which adolescents in Israel and the United States perceived government, politics, and public affairs. A series of open-ended interviews were conducted with approximately 300 high school students in each country immediately prior to the national elections in 1980–1981. Differences were found in regard to the extent to which the young people felt affected by and capable of affecting the larger political system, the extent to which voting was viewed as an important rite of passage to adulthood, and the extent to which they perceived having real choices in candidates and parties, with Israeli youth generally demonstrating more engagement in national governmental affairs. Finally, the conditions and factors that were likely to lead adolescents toward concern, interest, and participation in public affairs were offered.  相似文献

The study’s aim was to examine the relation between children’s symptom type, specifically externalized vs. internalized symptoms, and children’s perception of being blamed by family members for various family conflicts. The research hypothesis was based on theories of family therapy, in particular on the concept of scapegoating and projective identification processes. The subjects were chosen from treatment centres for children and adolescents, using the Achenbach Self‐Report Questionnaire. Subjects included males and females, aged 10–17, who had either internalized or externalized symptoms and no history of organic or psychotic disorders. The control group consisted of non‐symptomatic children. The research groups also included each child’s sibling closest in chronological age, who served as an additional control group. A total of 161 children participated in the study. It was found that externalizing children reported greater subjection to parental blame than did the other children.  相似文献

This study aims at examining the change in caring for individuals with developmental disability in the Haredi (Jewish ultra-Orthodox) community in Israel. Using qualitative methods, we examined the setting up and operating of educational, residential, and recreational facilities for this population. Of the 31 such facilities in two Israeli cities, 16 were randomly selected. The findings revealed three central issues expressing the process of a gradual change in the attitudes and in the forms of caring for persons with disabilities in this sector: (a) social crisis as a catalyst for change; (b) the Social model and rehabilitation principles; and (c) the role of the rabbis in the change process. These issues were explained based on the concept of 'adjustment mechanism'.  相似文献

This study examined patterns of romantic relationship turning points in 100 Israeli emerging adults (54 males) who were followed from age 22 to 29. Analyses of interviews at age 29 yielded four distinctive patterns of romantic transitions that are associated with different levels of concurrent well-being: positive outcome turning points, negative outcome turning points, formal turning points, and young people who could not identify any relational turning points. Young people who described a negative turning point or who were unable to identify a turning point were less involved and invested in romantic relationships. In addition, they reported a greater number of depressive symptoms. Those who described a positive outcome turning point or who pointed at a formal turning point reported more stable and healthy romantic relationships and a lower number of symptoms. Increased immature dependency and stress associated with goal attainment measured seven years earlier explained the tendency to identify a negative turning point or the inability to point to a significant event. Conceptualized within the reflexive model of transitions, findings suggest that personal assets such as personality attributes and developmental goal pursuit explain the ability or difficulty of young people to capture the meaning of events in their relational involvements and to move toward or interfere with settling down.  相似文献

The origin and frequency of spontaneous mutations that occur with age in humans have been a topic of intense discussion. The mechanisms by which spontaneous mutations arise depend on the parental germ line in which a mutation occurs. In general, paternal mutations are more likely than maternal mutations to be base substitutions. This is likely due to the larger number of germ cell divisions in spermatogenesis than in oogenesis. Maternal mutations are more often chromosomal abnormalities. Advanced parental age seems to influence some mutations, although it is not a factor in the creation of others. In this review, we focus on patterns of paternal bias and age dependence of mutations in different genetic disorders, and the various mechanisms by which these mutations arise. We also discuss recent data on age and the frequency of these mutations in the human male germ line and the impact of these data on this field of research.  相似文献

Abstract

The authors describe an innovative program designed to create a joint university and local municipality agency in Israel. The agency was structured to be a teaching laboratory that would offer innovative services for social work clients and a unique field placement for students. Four major goals involved joint outcomes for both university and municipality. These included (a) demonstrating evaluation research as a means of accountability and as a tool for practice; (b) using generic social work methods for work with families; (c) reaching out to difficult and high-risk clients with innovative programs; and (d) using the laboratory as a training center for welfare workers, agency supervisors, and students from all levels of the social work programs. The authors describe and evaluate each of the goals, discussing the implications for teaching and for social work practice.  相似文献
