On the optimality of a class of minimal covering designs

It is shown that the minimal covering designs for v=6t+5 treatments in blocks of size 3 are optimal w.r.t. a large class of optimality criteria. This class of optimality criteria includes the well-known criteria of A-, D- and E-optimality. It is conjectured that these designs are also optimal w.r.t. other criteria suggested by Takeuchi (1961).     

Beyond the transference: Interviews with adults and their parents in psychotherapy

This article illustrates the utilization of strategically introduced interviews with adults and their parents in psychodynamically oriented individual and marital psychotherapy. The effectiveness of these interviews in diagnostic data gathering, as crisis intervention, and in illuminating the parent-patient antecedents to patient-therapist conflicts is demonstrated. Transference implications of these family interviews is discussed.     

Costs and distortion of U.S. regulation policy in intercoastal lumber shipping

This article quantitatively analyzes the various impacts of current U.S. coastal restrictions on the Northwest lumber industry. The history of U.S. maritime regulation is briefly reviewed and a simulation model is developed to measure its affect on lumber shipments and transport costs. The results of the model indicate that aggregate cost redutions obtained through deregulation are likely to be small. The pattern of intercoastal shipments could change a great deal, however, with U.S. producers picking up a large share of the Northeast market.     

The Role of Other Family Members in Intergenerational Occupational Mobility*

The concept of “occupational origin” has traditionally been measured by father's occupation only, especially in studies of occupational mobility. The purpose of this study is to investigate whether the occupations of other family members are additional components of men's occupational origins Using data from the National Longitudinal Surveys of Mature Men, the traditional father-son mobility table was expanded to include paternal grandfathers' occupations and mothers' occupations. Log-linear analyses of these expanded mobility tables showed that paternal grandfathers' and mothers' occupations have significant associations with sons' occupations, controlling for level of fathers' occupations. The association between grandfathers' and sons' occupations is stronger than that between mothers' and sons' occupations. It was concluded that, while father's occupation is the main component, it does not fully capture the impact of occupational origin. Consequently, intergenerational mobility may be less frequent than is indicated in traditional father-son mobility analyses.     

Dream analysis in family therapy

Theoretical and practical aspects of dream analysis in family therapy are explored with case examples. The dream is considered tobe a disguised communication and it is used to aid in diagnosis and treatment. The dream is shown to be of special value with families who block communication or only appear to be cooperative. It is used to explore the unconscious elements of family life. Deciphering the dream helps to open new possibilities of communication within the family.
