Confidence intervals based on the lower extreme values of a large sample are constructed for the threshold parameter (unknown minimum-life) of a life distribution. The confidence level is exact for a certain class of beta distributions and asymptotically exact for a wide class of distributions often used in life testing.     

Institutional academic industry relationship: results of interviews with university leaders

The purpose of this study was to explore qualitatively the nature, consequences and management of institutional academic industry relationships (IAIRs) in the life and health sciences. The results of our interviews suggest that in the institutions we visited IAIRs are common and deeply embedded in the academic enterprise both among institutional officials and the organization itself. Many believe these relationships have potential benefits for the research and education mission while creating the potential for conflicts of interest. Further tracking and study of the IAIRs is required to understand and anticipate the full effects of these relationships on the scientific enterprise in the United States.

Anxiety disorders and older women

Anxiety is a problem for millions of Americans. It poses special challenges for women as they grow into advanced age. This paper provides a general overview of anxiety disorders, including panic disorder, agoraphobia, specific phobia, social phobia, obsessive compulsive disorder, and generalized anxiety disorder. Etiology, assessment and treatment strategies are then addressed. Special focus is directed at biological and psychosocial issues as they relate to older women in the development, experience, treatment and prevention of anxiety disorders.

Confidence intervals for the threshold parameter (guarantee-life ) are considered. The first k failure-times from a sample of size n are observed. Under the assumption that as n →∞ the first failure-time is attracted to the Weibull distribution, confidence intervals based on the observed range are constructed. It is shown that as k(k ≥ 2) increases the expected length of the confidence interval is substantially reduced. However, when k = 10 (or 20 in some cases) the expected length is near its minimum value.

Change of values in organizations and enterprises as an issue to organization counselors Ethical issues are hardly ever explicitly formulated in the process of supervision or organizational development. However they have a strong impact on the everyday procedures of an organization in the form of conflicting values and goals. The costs of such unresolved conflicts for organizations and enterprises should not be underestimated. Organization counselors have the adequate potential to facilitate even complex processes of value changes within an organization. The following article explains by an example how the controversies about conflicting interests based on value issues can be adressed in the context of an organizational development process. This is done on grounds of the person-centered approach by Carl Rogers.
