颍川之堂, 积善之家,秘书之里 ———台湾赖氏源流迁徙及其衍派发展

文章旨在探讨＂姬＂姓＂赖＂氏的源流、迁徙及其衍派发展,一则以彰显本宗先祖开创匪易的历史事实,一则为提倡家族发展的研究,藉以贞定身为中华民族薪火相传,移民为台湾人的主体自觉性格。中华民族由众多姓氏家族组合而成,以孝弟为本,故能敦睦亲和,＂慎终追远,民德归厚＂;其本深固,其源流长,绵延数千年而不衰。由台湾地区一家一族,一地一姓,可以确切明了台湾同胞迁徙与衍派的状况,具有历史传统与地理血缘的主体意识作用与价值。     

Evaluations of FWER-controlling methods in multiple hypothesis testing

Simultaneously testing a family of n null hypotheses can arise in many applications. A common problem in multiple hypothesis testing is to control Type-I error. The probability of at least one false rejection referred to as the familywise error rate (FWER) is one of the earliest error rate measures. Many FWER-controlling procedures have been proposed. The ability to control the FWER and achieve higher power is often used to evaluate the performance of a controlling procedure. However, when testing multiple hypotheses, FWER and power are not sufficient for evaluating controlling procedure’s performance. Furthermore, the performance of a controlling procedure is also governed by experimental parameters such as the number of hypotheses, sample size, the number of true null hypotheses and data structure. This paper evaluates, under various experimental settings, the performance of some FWER-controlling procedures in terms of five indices, the FWER, the false discovery rate, the false non-discovery rate, the sensitivity and the specificity. The results can provide guidance on how to select an appropriate FWER-controlling procedure to meet a study’s objective.     

Life expectancy of a bathtub shaped failure distribution

The mean residual life (MRL), or “life expectancy”, encapsulates the entire residual life of the product, and is thus of great interest in many fields, particularly those concerned with warranties, replacement policies, burn-in, and insurance. Estimating the profile of the MRL, let alone constructing confidence bands for it, is a difficult problem. We explore several approaches to estimating the variation in the profile of the mean residual life function, with special attention to a bathtub shaped failure distribution, called the modified Weibull distribution, which has generated considerable interest in reliability engineering. Parametric and non-parametric confidence bands are compared, and the theoretical coverage probabilities verified by simulation. An example application investigating the effectiveness of repairs is given, and possible further research discussed.

Decomposition of Chinese Life Expectancy via Occupation

In this article, we applied the concept of partial life expectancy to calculate the expected years of working life via occupation for the Chinese population beyond age 15. The calculations were based on the data from the population censuses of China in 1982, 1990 and 2000, which covered the period of eighteen years from the early economic reform years to the end of last century when the market economy became the official goal of the Chinese government. From our study, we found that, using partial life expectancy as the indicator, majority of the working life of the Chinese population has been on farming although it was slowly declining for both sexes from 1982 to 2000. In 1982, the expected years of working life on farming were 30.98 years for males and 26.45 years for females. In 2000, these values decreased to 27.09 and 26.16 years respectively. However, the expected years of working life in service sector increased from 1.88 years and 1.57 years in 1982 for males and females to 3.35 years for both sexes in 2000.
