Population mobility in Java: in search of theoretical explanation

"Given the current status of studies of population mobility in Java, this paper will attempt to construct a framework of analysis that can capture the interaction between macro socio-economic process and population mobility in Java. This paper thus first examines the theoretical approaches to population mobility in general. Second, it critically reviews the history of the movement of people in Java. A considerable literature on Indonesia makes it possible to reconstruct the broad socio-economic processes that have been associated with Javanese mobility since colonial times. Why nonprofit nursing homes pay higher nurses' salaries

It is generally agreed that nonprofit nursing homes pay higher wages to their employees, hire more staff per patient, and are thus more costly than for-profit nursing homes. We attempt to show that higher costs in nonprofit nursing homes are related to higher quality of care in these homes. Using the 1985 National Nursing Home Survey, we show that nurses in nonprofit nursing homes have different characteristics than nurses in for-profit homes and that these differences in characteristics account for the differences in wages, a finding consistent with our hypothesis concerning quality differences between types of homes.

Poland's population is projected to reach 40 million by the year 2000. In connection with this, the author compares Poland's position among other nations in Europe in terms of population size. The analysis further concentrates on various characteristics of the population.     

The influence of legal status on the labor market impact of immigration

This article explores US labor market changes that would take place as a result of an amnesty that would regularize the status of undocumented workers without changing the total size of the alien workforce. The theoretical analysis suggests that the influence of legal status on market wage rates and on minimum wage enforcement is weak and that to the extent that there is an effect, it depends on particular institutional arrangements. Although data are not adequate for a definite measurement of these effects, those data that are available support this conclusion. It appears that the presence of undocumented as opposed to resident aliens can weaken union organizing efforts.
