TimeOut@UCLA: An Intergenerational Respite Care and Workforce Development Program

TimeOut@UCLA is an intergenerational program that recruits undergraduate college students to provide companionship to older adults with early Alzheimer’s or other forms of dementia in a community setting, providing respite for their caregivers. In the program, 86 students and 89 seniors participated from September 2015 to December 2016. This program appears to reinforce positive attitudes about working with older adults among undergraduate students and gives caregivers an innovative option for respite time.     

Environmentally Responsible Happy Nation Index: Refinements and 2015 Rankings

Fifty years have elapsed since Cantril (1965) published his work on The Pattern of Human Concerns. His line of inquiry has stood the test of time. In late 2012, the nationally representative South African Social Attitudes Survey replicated Cantril’s 1960s questions and methodology to elicit South Africans’ hopes and aspirations and worries and fears for self and country and their ratings of where self and country stood—past, present and will stand in future. Although Cantril’s ‘ladder-of life’ scale is still regularly used as a measure of subjective well-being, to our knowledge his full line of preliminary questioning has not been fielded again to date. Our study found that South African aspirations for self were mainly material ones for a decent standard of living and the means to achieve this goal. Hopes for the nation concentrated on economic and political progress to consolidate South Africa’s democracy. A large number of personal and national hopes were mirrored in fears that these aspirations might not be met. Cantril’s method also allowed us to review the main concerns and ratings across the diverse groups of citizens that make up the ‘rainbow nation’. There was a substantial degree of consensus on top hopes and fears but levels of standing on the Cantril ladder of life were still graded according to apartheidera inequalities with black South Africans scoring lower than other race groups. Nonetheless, the majority of South Africans rated their present life better than 5 years ago and projected life to get better in future. Such optimism may place considerable pressure on the state to deliver on personal and societal hopes as the country enters its third decade of democracy.     

Vine copula models with GLM and sparsity

Vine copula provides a flexible tool to capture asymmetry in modeling multivariate distributions. Nevertheless, its flexibility is achieved at the expense of exponentially increasing complexity of the model. To alleviate this issue, the simplifying assumption (SA) is commonly adapted in specific applications of vine copula models. In this paper, generalized linear models (GLMs) are proposed for the parameters in conditional bivariate copulas to relax the SA. In the spirit of the principle of parsimony, a regularization methodology is developed to control the number of parameters, leading to sparse vine copula models. The conventional vine copula with the SA, the proposed GLM-based vine copula, and the sparse vine copula are applied to several financial datasets, and the results show that our proposed models outperform the one with SA significantly in terms of the Bayesian information criterion.     

食糖产业发展及其走向判断

内容提要作为一个关系到糖农生计问题和国家物价总体水平的基础性农副产品,食糖产业能否健康稳定发展成为社会关注的焦点问题之一。在目前的生产条件下,随着我国食糖消费刚性增长,食糖市场的供需缺口将会长期存在,并进入高价格时代。应加强糖料生产基础设施建设和品种技术研发推广,调整食糖产业利益分配机制,完善食糖市场宏观调控政策体系。。     

国内近十年抗战文化研究：—个文献综述

近十年来国内学界对抗战文化的研究逐渐重视,涌现出一批数量可观、富含价值的研究成果。近十年来学界对抗战文化的作用和影响、基本特征、内容、发展方向,抗战文化与妇女运动、抗战文化的表现形式、抗战文化遗迹的发掘与保护,华侨抗战文化、抗战报刊、地域性抗战文化、国统区抗战文化、西部抗战文化等有较多的研究。近十年的抗战文化研究较之以往的研究出现了新的特点：研究地域更加广泛、研究角度和研究范围拓宽、创新研究方法、地域性抗战文化研究兴盛等特点。总的来说,近十年来的抗战文化研究成就瞩目,但要认识到在研究中出现的问题,同时对抗战文化的的研究及其重要性的认识要进一步的加深。     

抗战时期人口内迁背景的西南大后方现代化

抗战时期的人口内迁是中国现代史上最大的一次人口内迁运动,至少超过一千万的沿海人口为躲避战乱纷纷迁入西部大后方。大量人口内迁,有力地推动了西南大后方城市化、教育现代化和社会习俗现代化。抗战时期西南地区现代化进程的加快,其动力因素主要来自于外部。抗战时期西部现代化属于中国的“后发外生型”现代化类型。     

少数民族高等教育机会的城乡差异研究

我国少数民族学生的高等教育入学机会存在显著的城乡差异,农村少数民族学生高等教育机会获得的数量和质量都要低于城市少数民族学生：较之汉族,少数民族高等教育入学机会的城乡差异程度更为明显,反映了少数民族群体内部入学机会的城乡分化甚于汉族群体。分析我国少数民族群体内部高等教育入学机会的城乡分化状况及其成因发现,城乡教育机会的差异不是单纯的教育问题,其背后隐藏的是我国城乡二元分割的社会结构以及与此相关的一系列政治、经济、文化、教育等制度性和现实性的分离。农村少数民族学生受经济、文化、教育等多方面因素的制约,成为我国实现高等教育机会均等的最薄弱环节之一,亟待引起重视。     

Long‐Term Predictions From Early Adolescent Attachment State of Mind to Romantic Relationship Behaviors

Attachment state of mind was investigated as a long‐term predictor of romantic relationship competence. A secure early adolescent attachment state of mind was hypothesized to predict more constructive dyadic behaviors during conflict discussions and support‐seeking interactions in late adolescence and early adulthood. Utilizing multimethod data from a community sample of 184 individuals, followed from ages 14 to 21, adolescents with a secure attachment state of mind at age 14 were found to be in relationships that displayed more constructive dyadic conflict discussion behaviors and dyadic supportive behaviors at both ages 18 and 21. Results suggest substantial links between early adolescent attachment state of mind and the adult romantic relationship atmosphere an individual creates and experiences.
