A comparison of confidence regions and designs in estimation of a ratio

A computer simulation is performed to compare confidence regions arising from Fie1ler's theorem and approximate large sample intervals in estimating the point of extremum in quadratic regression. In addition, two designs, one of which is motivated by optimal design theory, are compared. These comparisons are made by examining the confidence level and accuracy of the regions, as well as the concentration of the standard point estimator, in a variety of settings. The results have implications for the more general problem of estimating a ratio of linear combinations in the general linear model.     

Exact distribution-free tests for equality of several linear models

Exact tests for the equality of several linear models are developed using permutation techniques. Two cases of the linear model, characterized by either stochastic or nonstochastic predictors, are considered: the linear regression model (LRM) and the general linear model (GLM). A general class of test statistics using the volume of simplexes as the basic unit of analysis is proposed for this problem. The resulting class of statistics is shown to be a natural generalization of the multi-response permutation procedure (MRPP) test statistics which have been shown to comprise many of the statistics used in both parametric and nonparametric analysis of the standard g—sample problem. In the LRM case, exact moments of all orders are derived for the permutation distribution of any test statistic in the general class. Moment-based approximation of significance levels is shown to be computationally feasible in the simple LRM.     

Balanced e-optimal designs of resolution III for the 2×3 series

We consider the problem of constructing designs which are E-optimal in the class of all balanced resolution III designs for the 2^m×3ⁿ series. The inverse of the information matrix for general resolution III balanced 2^m×3ⁿ designs is obtained. Optimal designs are constructed for the cases (m,n)=(3, 1), (4, 1), (2, 2) and (3, 2) for various numbers of runs in the practical range.     

Remembering the impossible possibility: Kierkegaard and human capital

Kierkegaard is classified as an existentialist. The irony of course is if he were authentically existential, then he would escape any categorisation. Rather than reading Kierkegaard as yet one more item on the shelves of the history of philosophy, why not read him as though he were relevant to our lives? Our argument is that modern capitalism has taken a subjective turn, and therefore reading Kierkegaard is as timely as ever. This isn’t a matter of constructing a politics out his texts but applying it to our lives. The modern subjective form of capital is human capital as was already diagnosed by Foucault in his prophetic lectures on bio-politics. At the heart of human capital is the ideology of the subject as a form of investment. We want to show how Kierkegaard’s own account of subjectivity resists this appropriation of the self by capital through a new ontology of subjectivity. At the heart of this ontology is a reversal of Aristotle. It is not the actual that determines the possible, but the possible the actual.     

The impossibility of loving: blanchot,community, sexual difference

This paper aims to clarify Blanchot's notion of community and his practice of communism through, first, an account of his involvement in the Events of May 1968 and, second, an exploration of The Unavowable Community, in which Blanchot reads a short novel by Marguerite Duras, which recounts the tropisms of a brief relationship between a young woman and a homosexual man. As I show, Blanchot's affirmation of what he calls “the impossibility of loving”, which emerges from his reading of Duras, is linked to what he calls “worklessness [désoeuvrement]”; that is, the active process of loosening or undoing that contests any attempt to establish a community around a shared essence. I will claim that it is by attending to the relationship to worklessness that one might attend to what Blanchot calls the “spaces of freedom” that open around us: to those happenings which are not enclosed by prevailing determinations of the social space. A further aim of this paper is to address the concerns of Jacques Derrida, for whom Blanchot's writings on community betray what he calls in Politics of Friendship a “schematic of filiation”, in which the relation to the brother is the privileged model for the relation to the Other. I also provide an account of Blanchot's negotiation of Levinas's account of the relationship between ethics and eros as it is presented in Totality and Infinity.     

A note on the completeness of the normal family with constant coefficient of variation

Suppose that Z₁ …Zⁿ are independent and normally distributed with common mean u and variance σ².When σ² = λμ²with given λ> 0, it is well known that the minimal sufficient statistic is not complete for μ if n ≥ 2. The question of completeness seems to be unresolved when n = 1. In this note, we consider this case and, by using the heat equation, establish the second moment completeness of the minimal sufficient statistic, a property which is weaker than completeness but stronger than bounded completeness. Finally, we apply this result to a linear calibration problem.     

Introduction to the Social and Psychological Dynamics of Collective Action

Collective action is one of the core mechanisms of social change, and thus of major importance to social scientists, practitioners, and policy-makers. Our goal in editing this issue is to bring together recent advances on the social and psychological dynamics of collective action among members of disadvantaged as well as advantaged groups. This article introduces the contributions to this issue after a brief review of the major psychological perspectives on collective action (social identity, relative deprivation, and resource mobilization theories), and a discussion of the considerable diversity in collective action research in terms of contexts, populations, and measures. We hope that this issue contributes to a more multi-faceted and integrative understanding of the social and psychological dynamics of collective action in terms of theory, research, policy, and practice.
