Home care: moving forward with continuous quality improvement

The utility of examining the effectiveness of home care is illustrated by selected examples and applications. The growth rate of home care over the past decade, questions regarding the possibly substantial differences between the quality of home care in rural and urban America, and empirical evidence that suggests inferior quality of home care for health maintenance organization patients support the need for measuring and monitoring outcomes of home care. The conclusions of a research program targeted at developing a system of outcome measures for home care, and the resulting national demonstration program to implement and refine that system, are summarized.     

Regions of alternatives with high and low power for goodness-of-fit tests

In the present paper we find finite dimensional spaces W of alternatives with high power for a given class of tests and non-parametric alternatives. On the orthogonal complement of W the power function is flat. These methods can be used to reduce the dimension of interesting alternatives. We sketch a device how to calculate (approximately) an alternative with maximum power of a fixed test on a given ball of certain non-parametric alternatives.

The calculations are done within different asymptotic models specified by signal detection tests. Specific tests are Kolmogorov–Smirnov type tests, integral tests (like the Anderson and Darling test) and Rényi tests for hazard based models. The statistical meaning and interpretation of the spaces of alternatives with high power is discussed. These alternatives belong to least favorable directions of a class of statistical functionals which are linear combinations of quantile functions. For various cases their meaning is explained for parametric submodels, in particular for location alternatives.     

Generating Ordered Families of Lorenz Curves by Strongly Unimodal Distributions

From any strongly unimodal density on the real line, it is possible to generate a one-parameter family of Lorenz curves. The resulting families of Lorenz curves are Lorenz ordered with respect to the indexing parameter. Symmetry of the unimodal density results in the generation of symmetric Lorenz curves. A related characterization of the normal distribution is presented.

Lot Splitting in Stochastic Flow Shop and Job Shop Environments*

In recent years many firms have been implementing small lot size production. Lot splitting breaks large orders into smaller transfer lots and offers the ability to move parts more quickly through the production process. This paper extends the deterministic studies by investigating various lot splitting policies in both stochastic job shop and stochastic flow shop settings using performance measures of mean flow time and the standard deviation of flow time. Using a computer simulation experiment, we found that in stochastic dynamic job shops, the number of lot splits is more important than the exact form of splitting. However, when optimal job sizes are determined for each scenario, we found a few circumstances where the implementation of a small initial split, called a “flag,” can provide measurable improvement in flow time performance. Interestingly, the vast majority of previous research indicates that methods other than equal lot splitting typically improves makespan performance. The earlier research, however, has been set in the static, deterministic flow shop environment. Thus, our results are of practical interest since they show that the specific method of lot splitting is important in only a small set of realistic environments while the choice of an appropriate number of splits is typically more important.     

Toward a Mediation Model of Employability Enhancement: A Study of Employee‐Supervisor Pairs in the Building Sector

This study examines whether jobs that enable competence development and a constructive leadership style enhance workers' employability or career potential through their assumed positive relationship with work‐related flow (absorption, work enjoyment, and intrinsic work motivation). The authors conducted an explorative study with 303 pairs of employees and their direct supervisors working in a Dutch building company. Results indicate that self‐ratings of learning value of the current job and transformational leadership have an indirect relationship with supervisor ratings of employability through work‐related flow.
