Exposition Psychological and social aspects of disease: A comparison of traditional and complementary medicine

Some comparisons are made between the treatment of patients by traditional and complementary medicine. Asthma, as an example of psychosomatic disease, is used to present the need for holistic treatment in stress related disease for which the patient's compliance is required.     

The family culture of negotiation—a result of changing parent‐child relationships

Case studies of parent‐child relations in three different European regions—West Germany, East Germany and the Netherlands—offer material for the comparative analysis of the ongoing intra‐familial process of modernization and civilization in post‐war West European societies. The data are drawn from extended narrative interviews with twelve‐year‐olds and from parallel but separate semi‐structured ‘mirrored’ interviews with the same children and their parents. The results of the analysis show that family relations in general, and parent‐child relations in particular, are increasingly marked by a familial ‘culture of negotiation’. This suggests that the balance of intergenerational power relations is currently in the process of change. To a greater or lesser extent, contemporary family relations are characterized by situationally grounded processes of negotiation between parents and children.     

Best quadratic unbiased estimation of the variance matrix in normal regression

In 1973 Balestra examined the linear model y=XB+u, where u is a normally distributed disturbance vector, with variance matrix Ω. Ω has spectral decomposition \(\sum\limits_{i = 1}^r {\lambda _i M_i } \) , and the matrices M_i are known. Estimation of ω is thus equivalent with estimation of the λ_i. Balestra presented the best quadratic unbiased estimator of λ_i. In the present paper a derivation will be given which is based on a procedure developed by this writer (1980).

Healthcare System Types: A Conceptual Framework for Comparison

This article addresses the need to establish a comprehensive conceptual framework for analysing healthcare systems and their transformations. It begins by offering an overview of the current state of the art in the field, pointing to the literature's absence of conceptual robustness in the definition of system types. By exploring the dimensions 'financing', 'provision' and 'regulation' of healthcare, the article then proceeds deductively in line with the 'Weberian method of ideal-types' to establish a taxonomy of 27 healthcare systems, of which three can be identified as 'ideal-types'. When applying this concept, not only can differences between healthcare systems be analysed, but also changes over time. The article concludes by identifying three forms of healthcare system transformation.     

Optimal design for linear regression models in the presence of heteroscedasticity caused by random coefficients

Random coefficients may result in heteroscedasticity of observations. For particular situations, where only one observation is available per individual, we derive optimal designs based on the geometry of the design locus.
