KIDS' APPROACHES TO WHITENESS IN RACIALLY DISTINCT SUMMER DAY CAMPS

This study explores how preadolescents engaged in different interactional approaches to whiteness in racially distinct summer camps. Kids in the predominantly white and predominantly black contexts created peer cultures that differed in the following ways: (1) how they marked and defined whiteness, (2) how they made subject positions toward whiteness problematic, and (3) how they maintained different racial hegemonies. Mere numerical majority/minority relations, as well as differences in racial hegemony, caused kids to vary the meanings of whiteness, especially as the value of maintaining color-blind and color-aware orientations fluctuated. The findings suggest that the racial composition of a context may be key to encouraging recognition that white racial subjectivities are as subject to multiple interpretations, expressions, and embodiment as are racial subjectivities of color.     

State employee bargaining legislation

The authors test competing hypotheses drawn from the public versus private interest theories of regulation to determine the status of bargaining rights of state employees. N-chotomous probit is employed to predict legislation which is characterized as an ordinal scale ranging from prohibition to prescribed bargaining. The presence of voter coalitions rather than intent to remedy monopsonistic production inefficiency explains liberal legislation.

Confidentiality of child and adolescent treatment records

The confidentiality of records of a child or an adolescents who is receiving therapeutic intervention is not an absolute right. There are certain conditions under which the records of a minor who is undergoing treatment can be reviewed by others without prior written consent. This issue will be explored using the application of case laws to various conditions under which other professionals who are not directly involved in the minor's treatment may become privy to the individual's records.She has several years of experience in medical social work and as a chemical dependency counselor.     

Access to homeownership among immigrant groups in Canada

Ces dernières années l'intéret s'est accru pour les expériences des immigrants après leur arrivée dans la societé nord-américaine. Dans cet article, nous argumentons le fait que le logement, et plus spécifiquement le bail, est un sujet important bien que largement négligé en ce qui concerne la vie de l'immigrant dans la société canadienne. En utilisant des chiffres du recensement de 1986 et la structure des modèles log-linéaires, nous examinons les baux des logements des immigrants dans les différentes régions du Canada. On argumente que les immigrants sont différenciés par la culture, le temps et l'espace en ce qui concerne le bail, avec des immigrants plus récents, particuliérement ceux qui arrivent des pays en voie de développement, qui ont des taux de propriété particulierement plus bas.
In recent years interest has grown in the post-arrival experiences of immigrants in North American society. In this paper we argue that housing, and more specifically tenure, is an important, though largely neglected, issue with respect to immigrant life in Canadian society. Using data from the 1986 census and a log-linear modelling framework, we examine housing tenure among immigrants in the regions of Canada. It is argued that immigrants are a culturally, temporally and spatially differentiated sub-population in regard to tenure, with more recent immigrants, especially those from the Developing World, having substantially lower rates of homeownership.     

Where Does the Ownership of a Decision Lie?

SUMMARY This paper examines Leavitt's three-part model of path-finding, problem solving and decision making, and implementation in order to explore how far this model encapsulates the senior manager role. The discussion suggests that all three dimensions are important. The author argues that the top manager of the future in an increasingly complex economic world must primarily have good all round vision of the world in which he or she operates and the ability to communicate and implement his plans via subordinates. Increasingly he can delegate much of the problem solving function. This managerial profile implies that the education of the top manager of the future needs re-examination to ensure that potential senior executives are adequately equipped to guide commercial institutions into the 21st century.     

Limitations of civic service: critical perspectives

Community, national, and international service policies andprograms exist worldwide. Anecdotally, their prevalence hasincreased dramatically in recent years. Their proliferationindicates a tacit presumption of their positive nature. Whileacknowledging the benefits of these programs, we call attentionto the possible limitations of service, including elitism, stateinterests, and imperialism. We emphasize implications for policy,practice, and research.
