LABOR FORCE COMPOSITION AND THE PHILLIPS CURVE

This paper presents a model of unemployment and wage inflation based on Phillips curves estimated by age-sex-color groups. The model is estimated using data for the period 1949–1967 with projections for the period 1968–1973. The paper concludes that when allowances are made for changes in the age-sex-color composition of the labor force the standard Phillips curve framework is quite capable of explaining the 1968–1973 period without resorting to the notion of a "natural rate of unemployment" or a "long run Phillips curve."     

An Anomaly in Political Perception

This article uses two theories of political perception, displacementtheory and political cue theory, to analyze the abortion issue.Although both theories are supported, neither can account forthe anomaly of collective misperception of Ted Kennedy's position.Experimentally manipulating the salience of politics and religionaffected perception of Kennedy's position in a way that supportedan extended version of political cue theory.     

CHANGE-POINT ANALYSIS OF THE GROWTH EFFECTS OF STATE BANKING DEREGULATION

This article uses recent developments in change-point analysis to demonstrate that stronger income growth rates previously associated with state bank branch deregulation were in all cases temporary rather than permanent. In addition, patterns of temporal ordering across regions suggest that in many states deregulation was a response to economic conditions rather than the reverse. (JEL E44 , G28 )     

Interviewing Changes Attitudes--Sometimes

To examine the effects of interviewing respondents were questionedabout either cancer or burglary prevention in an interview,and later they received either relevant information or no information.Changes in attitudes were measured in a second interview, andthe results showed that asking questions about cancer changedrespondents' attitudes toward cancer, but interviewing aboutburglary prevention did not change attitudes toward crime. Theevidence suggests that interview effects will occur when therespondent's attitudes and information are unfocused or ambiguousand the topic is important. Theoretically, this can be attributedto competence motivation and a postulated desire to maintainself-esteem in the interview situation
