This paper examines the net effect of unions on productivity in the commercial banking industry. The focus of the study is
on three methodological issues. First, an attempt is made to determine whether individual unions have a differential impact
on banking productivity. The influence of unions on output per man-hour was initially estimated by including a union dummy
variable in a Cobb-Douglas formulation of bank production. Separate binary variables were then entered into alternative specifications
of the model to test the heterogeneity hypothesis. This hypothesis postulates differential productivity effects among the
individual unions operating in the commercial banking sector. Second, the sample banks were paired on a case-by-case basis
to assure the homogeneity of the two groupings: i.e., union and nonunion. Sample homogeneity is necessary because of the assumptions
of identical production functions and output prices between the groups. Third, a complete covariance model was specified in
order to estimate the impact of unionization on each parameter of the production function. In general, the unionized banks
were less productive than their nonunion peers. It should be noted, however, that the standard errors were large in all the

The present study sought to examine longitudinal associations among delinquency, children's disclosure to parents, parent-child relationship quality, and parental knowledge in a South Korean sample. Longitudinal research shows that in Western samples, delinquency is negatively associated with the latter three variables. We also sought to test whether the associations varied across gender. We found little evidence of significant reciprocal relationships among the variables and no differences in associations across gender. A second analysis revealed that adolescents’ involvement with delinquent peers was a good predictor of subsequent delinquency for males and females. AbstractPrevious theory and research in persuasion has failed to examine possible ironic effects of attempting to suppress or to correct for influences of a potentially biasing source. Yet, because people often encounter sets of persuasive communications in order (e.g., in advertising), such rebound effects seem possible. Data on such possibilities are scarce, however. Here we present a relevant study. It followed the typical single-shot persuasive message with a second message on an unrelated topic but employed a similar type of (potentially biasing — attractive or unattractive) source. Attitudes following the second communication showed increased source impact for participants asked to suppress source-related thoughts during the first message (especially when the second message was encountered under load). Instructions to correct for potential source effects during the first message did not show ironic effects following the second message. This relatively small study is not enough to make definitive claims, but it suggests that rebound effects of thought suppression are possible in (repeated) persuasion settings. We describe the design and analysis for a simulation experiment to compare the mean-squared errors (MSE's) of two quantile estimators defined for random walk designs. The dependence of the easily computed MSE of the first estimator on the levels of five factors is examined via multiple regression. This information is used to plan a simulation to compute the MSE of the second estimator using a fraction of a 3352factorial allowing uncorrelated estimates for all main effects and the two-factor interactions of a specified factor. The environment of the American corporation is becoming politicized by a variety of trends in the specific sense that social, political and legal developments are assuming greater strategic importance relative to market competition. As a result, long-range planning at the level of enterprise strategy is increasingly important. This paper examines two major illustrations of such politicization in the context of commercial law (the Westinghouse uranium crisis) and environmental regulation (Consolidated Edison's Storm King Mountain project). Marriage and family services have not been widely recognized as part of employee assistance programs (EAP), although family and relational problems are widely cited as sources of problems on the job. EAP clients (N = 800, 97% self-referred) indicated how much family, psychological/emotional, drug, alcohol, employment-related, legal, and medical problems troubled them and the need for services in each area. Psychological/emotional (66%) and family (65%) problem areas frequently were rated "considerable" or "extreme." Both areas were rated as "considerable" or "extreme" by 48.6% of participants. In view of the evidence that marriage and family services can be effective with both family and psychological/emotional problems, professionals who are competent to provide such services have much to offer EAP programs. 相似文献
