Humans can detect whether athletes are leading or trailing based on thin slices of athletes’ nonverbal behavior, presumably because communicating and interpreting status has evolved to be highly beneficial for humans. The goal of the present research was to examine this evolutionary perspective on nonverbal behavior in sports. First, in Experiment 1 (N = 40), we investigated if leading athletes are rated higher on dimensions related to social status than are trailing athletes. Experiment 1 showed that perceivers rated leading athletes as more dominant, more proud, and more confident than trailing athletes, without being aware of the actual score. Second, we were interested in the role of head-related versus body-related information and in the role of dynamic versus static information. In Experiment 2, 120 participants watched short videos from basketball matches and rated whether athletes were leading or trailing. We occluded either athletes’ faces, athletes’ bodies, or showed both faces and bodies. Experiments 2 and 3 (N = 160) showed that very scarce information was sufficient for differentiating between leading and trailing athletes, even when faces or bodies were occluded. These findings are in line with ecological approaches to person perception and evolutionary accounts of nonverbal behavior. 相似文献
Abstract Local environmental groups, although acknowledged increasingly since the mid‐1980s, have not been sampled systematically, have been reported to consist of only a few types, and are often considered to be of only minor political significance. In this study we systematically inventoried all local environmental groups in two U.S. geographical areas: the Delmarva Peninsula and the state of North Carolina. We found 566 local groups, seven to 20 times the number reported in the best published directory. Three‐quarters did not fit the types most commonly characterized in the literature. Extrapolating from our study areas, we estimate that 16,000 to 30,000 local environmental groups are active in the United States. We find that these groups have a subset of “core” members, those active in organizing and local operations. We estimate the population of core members at 265,000 to 290,000, over 50 times the total of professional staff members of all U.S. national environmental organizations. These groups affect local and state environmental policy, enforcement of environmental laws, the shaping of environmental issues, and the social infrastructure for environmental behaviors. 相似文献
Accountability has become a major issue in the nonprofit sector. Numerous external and internal approaches to strengthening performance in this area exist, and many nonprofit boards expect their executives to account foruse of their organizations' resources. However, few boards apply any such expectations to themselves. Qualitative analysis of records from interviews, consultations, and meeting observations with 169 board members of thirty‐four diverse nonprofit organizations revealed six sets of practices that foster board accountability. They include setting clear expectations and standards for the group and for its members, actively using policies regarding conflicts of interests, identifying and staying focused on priorities, maintaining strong two‐way communications directly with constituency groups, conducting assessments of meetings and board performance, and experimenting intentionally with new approaches to their work. The experiences of these boards provide numerous examples of practical steps that others may consider when they seek to increase the value they add to their organizations as well as to strengthen public trust. 相似文献
In light of growing scholarly works on business failure, across the social science domains, it is surprising that past studies have largely overlooked how extreme environmental shocks and ‘black swan’ events such as those caused by the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and other global crises, can precipitate business failures. Drawing insights from the current literature on business failure and the unfolding event of COVID-19, we highlight the paradoxes posed by novel exogenous shocks (that is, shocks that transcend past experiences) and the implications for SMEs. The pandemic has accelerated the reconfiguration of the relationship between states and markets, increasing the divide between those with political connections and those without, and it may pose new legitimacy challenges for some players even as others seem less concerned by such matters, whilst experiential knowledge resources may be both an advantage and a burden. 相似文献
There has been increasing interest in using semi-supervised learning to form a classifier. As is well known, the (Fisher) information in an unclassified feature with unknown class label is less (considerably less for weakly separated classes) than that of a classified feature which has known class label. Hence in the case where the absence of class labels does not depend on the data, the expected error rate of a classifier formed from the classified and unclassified features in a partially classified sample is greater than that if the sample were completely classified. We propose to treat the labels of the unclassified features as missing data and to introduce a framework for their missingness as in the pioneering work of Rubin (Biometrika 63:581–592, 1976) for missingness in incomplete data analysis. An examination of several partially classified data sets in the literature suggests that the unclassified features are not occurring at random in the feature space, but rather tend to be concentrated in regions of relatively high entropy. It suggests that the missingness of the labels of the features can be modelled by representing the conditional probability of a missing label for a feature via the logistic model with covariate depending on the entropy of the feature or an appropriate proxy for it. We consider here the case of two normal classes with a common covariance matrix where for computational convenience the square of the discriminant function is used as the covariate in the logistic model in place of the negative log entropy. Rather paradoxically, we show that the classifier so formed from the partially classified sample may have smaller expected error rate than that if the sample were completely classified.
A modelling procedure is proposed for complex, dynamic household data structures where households change composition over time. Multilevel multiple membership models are presented for such data and their application is discussed with an example. 相似文献
AbstractThis article examines how mental health service users/consumers, advocates, professionals and researchers interpret and theorise the impacts of mental health news. It focuses on the following themes: Creating fears about mental illness by focusing on criminal and violent acts; Reinforcing power imbalances by privileging biomedical issues and sources; and Sanitising mental health issues through the selective use of personal narratives. The study draws upon the concept of biocommunicability, which casts light on the performative power of health news in reinforcing ideas and expectations about the appropriate role for different actors to adopt in relation to health knowledge. Previous research on health news has identified biomedical authority, patient-consumer and public sphere as three predominant models of biocommunicability and this article examines how these are bound up with criticisms of mental health news. The findings are related to the ‘mediatisation of psychiatric culture’ as one of extremes and perspectives from Mad Studies. 相似文献
Family caps seek to reduce fertility among welfare recipients by denying additional cash assistance to recipients who have
children while on welfare. A necessary condition for family caps to be an effective policy tool is that welfare recipients
respond to financial incentives in making decisions that affect subsequent fertility outcomes. This paper uses data from the
2001 and 2004 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to examine whether welfare mothers respond to
the incentive provided by the Aid to Families with Dependent Children/Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (AFDC/TANF) system
in determining whether or not to have a second child. The results show no evidence that family caps have an effect on the
subsequent childbearing of never married women.
