Face à l'économie informelle au Mozambique: volontarisme ou maintien du statu quo?

L'économie informelle fournit l'essentiel de l'emploi dans nombre de pays émergents. Selon la théorie de la régulation, l'activité économique est régie par un ensemble complexe de règles formelles et informelles. Les auteurs examinent, à partir du cas du Mozambique, les éléments qui favorisent ou entravent la transition vers l'économie formelle, ainsi que les diverses formes de régulation, en s'appuyant sur une enquěte qualitative conjuguant observation directe et entretiens avec des personnalités locales. Les données recueillies font apparaître un rôle ambivalent de l'Etat, qui se montre parfois volontariste et soucieux de réformer la réglementation et les institutions et parfois partisan du statu quo.     

The Friendships of Women: Are there Differences between African Americans and Whites?

Research suggests that friendships often aid in the sustainability of longer, healthier lives and contribute to mental well-being. However, comparative research between how African American and White women carry out their friendships is limited. Based on qualitative interviews with 40 women (20 African American and 20 White), this article describes the nature of women's friendships and explores comparisons between these two groups of women. Findings relevant to the formation of friendships and the types of support that they provide can inform the design and implementation of clinical interventions, particularly those focused on relationship building.     

Studying cognitive development in sociocultural context: The development of a practice‐based approach

This paper sketches the development of a research framework for analyzing the interplay between culture and cognitive development in cultural practices and the methodological tensions that gave rise to the framework. The framework consists of three components geared for analyzing intrinsic relations between culture and cognitive development. The first focuses on the analysis of individuals' goals as they take form in everyday practices. The second is concerned with the shifting relations between cognitive forms and cognitive functions in individuals' efforts to accomplish those goals. The third focuses on the appropriationandspecialization of forms structured in one practice to accomplish emergent goals in another. Applications and progressive refinements of the framework are discussed in analyses of practices of economic exchange in a remote group in Papua New Guinea, number play in middle and working class children in Brooklyn, New York, and candy selling in Northeastern Brazil.

Despite recent trends away from the traditional medical model of service delivery, there appears to be a continuing reluctance among some rehabilitation professionals to fully enable people with disabilities to co-manage their own rehabilitation programmes. These same professionals may remain unaware that their behaviour discourages their clients from taking greater responsibility for solving problems and achieving goals of living. Contradictions in the beliefs and behaviour of service providers is, at grass roots level, perhaps exemplified by their adherence to formal case-team meetings which exclude service recipients. The need to re-define and alter the format of these conferences is the focus of this paper.     

The effects of family caps on the subsequent fertility decisions of never-married mothers

Family caps seek to reduce fertility among welfare recipients by denying additional cash assistance to recipients who have children while on welfare. A necessary condition for family caps to be an effective policy tool is that welfare recipients respond to financial incentives in making decisions that affect subsequent fertility outcomes. This paper uses data from the 2001 and 2004 panels of the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP) to examine whether welfare mothers respond to the incentive provided by the Aid to Families with Dependent Children/Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (AFDC/TANF) system in determining whether or not to have a second child. The results show no evidence that family caps have an effect on the subsequent childbearing of never married women.

A dynamic multiple-variety choice adaption model

The choice of a product on one purchase occasion by one consumer could be multiple varieties and influenced by past usage experience of this product. To mimic the real situation, this article proposes a new dynamic multiple-variety choice (DMC) model which incorporates quantitative and qualitative dynamics into an additive utility function. This model exhibits three major features of consumer purchase behavior: more than one variety purchased, learning behavior from use experience, and forgetting with the passage of time. All these are achieved by combining a simultaneous demand model with Bayesian learning theory embedded in an exponential function. The model is tested and validated using Hong Kong television viewing data. Empirical results show that including Bayesian learning in a multiple-choice model significantly improves model performance and prediction accuracy, and consideration of the effect of forgetting when studying learning behavior renders the Bayesian learning model much more accurate in practical application.     

Healthcare for men and women with learning disabilities: understanding inequalities in access

Healthcare for men and women with learning disabilities (known internationally as intellectual disabilities) has risen up the political agenda in the United Kingdom, propelled by a report from the charity Mencap. This report has resulted in renewed efforts, set out in Valuing People Now, to ensure that people with learning disabilities receive the healthcare they are entitled to. This paper, drawing upon experience in England, describes the challenges of providing healthcare to men and women with learning disabilities; reviews Death by Indifference and the reports produced in its aftermath; presents findings from a small-scale study of access to healthcare undertaken in the East of England; and concludes with a discussion of whether the policies in Valuing People Now will improve healthcare for men and women with learning disabilities.
