The Effects of Managerial Succession on Organizational Performance   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Boyne and Dahya (2002) posit that the means, motives, and opportunitiesavailable to top managers will affect their ability to impactorganizational performance. In this analysis, I test the theoryposited by Boyne and Dahya and expand the model by exploringwhether the performance effects of executive succession differbetween an internal promotion and an external hire. Using Texasschool superintendents as the managers in question, I use pooled,time-series data to test both the immediate and the long-termeffects of managerial succession on performance. The findingsreveal that an immediate, negative effect of executive successionis present only in the case of an externally hired replacementand that the long-term effect of managerial change on organizationalperformance is positive. These findings suggest that publicmanagerial succession does influence organizational performance.  相似文献

Arising from interest concerning the possibility of causal relationships among the three components of the Maslach Burnout Inventory, several process models have been proposed for the development of burnout. The present paper first reviews the evidence in favour of the three most influential of these (Leiter and Maslach's model (1988); Golembiewski, Boudreau, Munzenrider, & Luo's (1996) phase model; and Lee and Ashforth's model (1993)). These three models, and our own model (which integrates of two of them, and includes feedback effects of depersonalization on emotional exhaustion) are then compared with each other using structural equation modelling, drawing on longitudinal data from two Dutch samples (total N=1185). The review revealed that none of the seven previous studies on this issue provided any convincing support for any particular causal order proposed so far. In contrast, our own study showed that high levels of exhaustion were associated with high levels of depersonalization over time across both samples. Further, higher levels of depersonalization led to higher levels of emotional exhaustion and lower levels of personal accomplishment. To our knowledge, the present research is the first to provide reliable longitudinal evidence for the conceptualization of burnout as a developmental process, although the effects are not large enough to be of practical use in the recognition of burnout.  相似文献

Using the 1994–1998 waves of the Current Population Survey—Child Support Supplement (N =5,387), the aims of this study are to document child support obligation rates of nonresident fathers, to examine the effect of the obligation rate on child support compliance, and to calculate the trade‐off between fathers’ financial responsibility and children's well‐being, paying particular attention to low‐income fathers. The results indicate that low‐income fathers have high child support obligation rates, which significantly reduce their child support compliance. Although lowering the obligation rate for these fathers may improve their compliance, it does not fully offset the lowered obligation amounts and leads to a 30% net payment loss for welfare mothers and a 43% loss for nonwelfare mothers. Policy implications are discussed.  相似文献

This paper illustrates how stance functions as a semiotic resource that feeds into and mediates institutional context. I consider stance not only as linguistic expression but as interactive, bodily engagement, synchronized in multimodal layers of participation. Using data from a focus group interview, I examine how stance emerges in the collaborative rhythms of linguistic, paralinguistic and, most prominently, embodied conduct between speaker and listener to index socio‐cultural knowledge about the jurisdictional division of labor among legal professionals. Drawing on Charles Frake's classic ‘Struck by speech,’ I illustrate not only how a speaker strikes his listener with speech, but also how the body of the listener displays being struck.  相似文献

The alliance of social work and theater is a natural and powerful coalition. The cooperation of two undergraduate programs to produce a preventive program on sexual abuse education reached over 4,000 children. Social work was the catalyst in terms of identifying the need, obtaining grant money, and developing community support. Theater provided the talent to produce an outstanding performance. Communities planning to develop successful prevention programs must develop community support, clear goals, a well-trained follow-up team, education for professionals who work with children daily, a clear channel for reporting abuse, and an evaluation process. The use of volunteers keeps the cost of the project to a minimum.  相似文献
