Study of Cases of Child Sexual Abuse Referred for Medico-Legal Examination in Cairo and Giza,Egypt,2007–2011

ABSTRACT

Child sexual abuse is a complex problem that results in detrimental effects on its victims. This study aimed to investigate the pattern of child sexual abuse in cases referred for medico-legal examination in Cairo and Giza governorates in the period between 2007–2011. The study included 813 cases of child sexual abuse. Female gender was more predominant than male gender (52.8%, 4.29 cases), and adolescents were the most frequent age group identified as victims of sexual abuse (43.8%, 356 cases). All perpetrators were male and most of them were persons outside the victims’ families (89.9%, 731 cases). It was recommended to teach and encourage children to tell their caregivers if they have been assaulted and to educate parents and caregivers on how to respond when the child discloses sexual abuse.     

Academic Coping, Friendship Quality, and Student Engagement Associated with Student Quality of School Life: A Partial Least Square Analysis

This study aims to examine an untested research model that explains the direct- and indirect influences of Academic Coping, Friendship Quality, and Student Engagement on Student Quality of School Life. This study employed the quantitative-based cross-sectional survey method. The sample consisted of 2400 Malaysian secondary Form Four students chosen equally from 50 schools using Multistage Stratified Cluster Sampling procedure. Self-reported questionnaire was administered. The data was analyzed with Partial Least Square approach using SmartPLS 2.0. Findings showed that Academic Coping, Student Engagement, and Friendship Quality significantly explained about 46 % of variance in Student Quality of School Life. Student Engagement also contributed approximately 44 % of variance in mediating the relationship between Academic Coping and Student Quality of School Life; and approximately 67 % of variance between Friendship Quality and Student Quality of School Life. Findings indicated the predictability of the model in terms of predictive relevance and global goodness of fit. Limitations and suggestions for future studies are discussed.     

Estimation from Burr type XII distribution using progressive first-failure censored data

In this paper, a new life test plan called a progressively first-failure-censoring scheme introduced by Wu and Ku? [On estimation based on progressive first-failure-censored sampling, Comput. Statist. Data Anal. 53(10) (2009), pp. 3659–3670] is considered. Based on this type of censoring, the maximum likelihood (ML) and Bayes estimates for some survival time parameters namely reliability and hazard functions, as well as the parameters of the Burr-XII distribution are obtained. The Bayes estimators relative to both the symmetric and asymmetric loss functions are discussed. We use the conjugate prior for the one-shape parameter and discrete prior for the other parameter. Exact and approximate confidence intervals with the exact confidence region for the two-shape parameters are derived. A numerical example using the real data set is provided to illustrate the proposed estimation methods developed here. The ML and the different Bayes estimates are compared via a Monte Carlo simulation study.     

Bayesian prediction with a random sample size for the burr lifetime distribution

This paper is concerned with the problem of deriving Bayesian prediction bounds for the Burr distribution when the sample size is a random variable. Prediction bounds for both the future observations (the case of two-sample prediction) and the remaining observations in the same sample (the case of one-sample prediction) will be derived. The analysis will depend mainly on assuming that the size of the sample is a random variable having the Poisson distribution. Finally, numerical examples are given to illustrate the results.     

Estimation of parameters of the inverse gaussian-weibull mixture model

The main objective of this work is to estimate the 5-dime-nsional vector of parameters (p,μ,λ,α,c) of the mixture of an Inverse Gaussian IG(μ,λ) and Weibull W(α,c) distributions with mixing proportion p. We use the maximum Likelihood method (MLM) and the weighted maximum likelihood method (WMLM), both under the sampling schemes suggested by Hosmer (1973). Simulation study shows that the WMLM performs best, when Hosmer's model 2 is used, in the sense of minimizing the mean square error.     

Nurturing “Critical Hope” in Teaching Feminist Social Work Research

Despite the congruence between critical feminist values and the cardinal values of the social work profession, feminist research in social work has lagged behind its feminist cousins in the social sciences, particularly in terms of critical uses of theory, reflexivity, and the troubling of binaries. This article presents as praxis our reflections as researchers, teachers, and feminists inside social work. We draw from a review of feminist social work research and offer suggestions for teaching critical feminist approaches in social work research. Incorporating critical feminist values and research practices into social work research courses creates the potential for greater integration of research, practice, and the principal values of our profession.

A Measure of Discrimination Between two Double Truncated Distributions

On the basis of Kullback-Leibler discrimination information, and of discrimination measures introduced by Ebrahimi and Kirmani (1996a) and by Di Crescenzo and Longobardi (2004), we propose a measure of discrepancy between double truncated distributions. Some properties of this measure are studied and some mistakes in the preceding literature are corrected.     

An extended Gompertz-Makeham distribution with application to lifetime data

In this paper, we propose an extension of the Gompertz-Makeham distribution. This distribution is called the transmuted Gompertz-Makeham (TGM). The new model which can handle bathtub-shaped, increasing, increasing-constant and constant hazard rate functions. This property makes TGM is useful in survival analysis. Various statistical and reliability measures of the model are obtained, including hazard rate function, moments, moment generating function (mgf), quantile function, random number generating, skewness, kurtosis, conditional moments, mean deviations, Bonferroni curve, Lorenz curve, Gini index, mean inactivity time, mean residual lifetime and stochastic ordering; we also obtain the density of the ith order statistic. Estimation of the model parameters is justified by the method of maximum likelihood. An application to real data demonstrates that the TGM distribution can provides a better fit than some other very well known distributions.
