This paper utilizes data from the 1981 Canadian Time Use Pilot Study and from a small Halifax time-budget study to look at subjective and contextual dimensions of leisure for women and men. The Canadian study (n=2685) had information on the time spent in daily activities as well as on the settings and social contexts of those activities. The Halifax study included similar time-budget information on 60 married couples, but also incorporated subjective ratings of all diary events in terms of perceived work or leisure. Using subjective weightings from the Halifax study, estimates of subjective leisure were made for different categories of daily activity and for different Canadian population subgroups. Hypercodes were used to look at the effect of social roles on leisure time, and the AID procedure was used to analyze the contextual dimensions of leisure for men and women. The results show that objective activity and well as subjective leisure vary by population subgroup. Constraints to leisure include being female, being employed, having children, and, to some degree, being married. Of the contextual dimensions, subjective leisure was shown to be influenced primarily by type of objective activity. Location, time of day and day of the week also influenced leisure designations, but to a lesser extent. This study suggests the potential usefulness of subjective weightings of activities in order to gain a greater understanding of leisure patterns and participation.  相似文献

Despite a growing body of research on attitudes towards unions in the U.S. and, to a lesser extent Britain, surprisingly little is known about this topic in Canada. We attempt to fill this gap by examining data from a survey of 736 randomly selected residents of the western Canadian cities of Winnipeg and Edmonton. We find a high degree of latent unionism among non-unionized labor force members: 40 percent would join a union if one existed in their workplace. Union attitudes are better predictors of willingness to join than are demographic and socioeconomic variables, although we can predict instrumental beliefs about unions with some accuracy using such objective measures. In his seminal work Braverman (1974) suggested that, like manual workers, the majority of ‘non-productive’ workers are equally subject to scrutiny and Tayloristic methods of rationalisation and differentiation (sub-division of work into simple, repetitive operations) of the tasks they perform. The result is ‘de-skilling’ whereby labour is reduced to the repetitive performance of mechanical tasks and an intensification of work is achieved. Following the debate that has arisen from Braverman's work, concentrating largely on either de-skilling and/or strategies of management control, there have been wide-ranging qualifications to Braverman's core theory. I wish to suggest that ‘up-skilling’ (as opposed to de-skilling) may also represent an intensification of work, since the terms and conditions under which skill is enhanced is centrally relevant. This is argued in relation to the ‘extended role’ functions of midwives and Intensive Care nurses, whereby the tasks normally carried out by doctors are performed in a proxy capacity by nurses/midwives, while remaining in the ‘ownership’ of the medical profession. In the course of the above discussion, the article explores the way in which the sexual division of labour (between the female gendered profession of nursing and the male gendered medical profession) changed but survived in a negotiated form.  相似文献

Based upon documents and interviews, this paper presents an analytical history of interactions between the United States Bureau of the Census and Mexican-American leaders preparatory to the 1980 census. Participants confronted several issues, such as defining Hispanic ethnicity, designing instruments and field procedures, and maximizing public participation. Although census officials and ethnic leaders aimed at getting a “full count,” the former emphasized scientific objectives while the latter emphasized the political.  相似文献

This paper investigates trends in public support for unionism during the 1980s. Comparing data from two western Canadian cities in 1981 and 1987, we examine the impact of the recession of the early 1980s on public perceptions of the role of unions, whether the differences between cities documented during 1981 had increased or decreased by 1987, and if “hard times” had resulted in more nonunion employees expressing a willingness to join a union. There is little evidence of growing support for negative “big labor” opinions about unions in the two cities. Despite a well-publicized labor dispute involving the use of strikebreakers in one city, there was no increase in support for legislation restricting the practice. Residents in the same city, however, were significantly more likely to agree with “business unionism” sentiments, an opinion trend accompanied by a growing willingness to join a union. An analysis of safety culture attitudes in a highly regulated environment   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5  
Culture is a complex construct in organizations, consisting of attitudes, perceptions, values and beliefs, which must necessarily be set in context. Many authors imply that culture is organization-wide and common to all employees. In terms of safety culture, the organizational context may determine its salience and likelihood of affecting behaviour, especially in a highly regulated environment such as the nuclear industry. This study investigates the components of safety culture and how it varies in a highly-regulated nuclear power plant. A 60-item questionnaire measuring safety attitudes and values was administered anonymously to 1550 employees at two plants in the UK nuclear industry, with a 64.7% mean response rate. Principal components analyses revealed six factors conceptually common to shop floor and management (supervisor/manager/professional) groups for both plants, relating to: management style and communication; responsibility and commitment; risk-taking; job satisfaction; complacency; and risk awareness. A canonical discriminant analysis of the items suggested that the data could distinguish three employee groups. The implications of these findings and the proposal that there are two or more safety cultures in the organization is discussed.  相似文献

Noncancer risk assessment traditionally relies on applied dose measures, such as concentration in inhaled air or in drinking water, to characterize no-effect levels or low-effect levels in animal experiments. Safety factors are then incorporated to address the uncertainties associated with extrapolating across species, dose levels, and routes of exposure, as well as to account for the potential impact of variability of human response. A risk assessment for chloropentafluorobenzene (CPFB) was performed in which a physiologically based pharmacokinetic model was employed to calculate an internal measure of effective tissue dose appropriate to each toxic endpoint. The model accurately describes the kinetics of CPFB in both rodents and primates. The model calculations of internal dose at the no-effect and low-effect levels in animals were compared with those calculated for potential human exposure scenarios. These calculations were then used in place of default interspecies and route-to-route safety factors to determine safe human exposure conditions. Estimates of the impact of model parameter uncertainty, as estimated by a Monte Carlo technique, also were incorporated into the assessment. The approach used for CPFB is recommended as a general methodology for noncancer risk assessment whenever the necessary pharmacokinetic data can be obtained.  相似文献
