We explored the influences of women's social learning, marital resources and constraints, and exposure to norms about women's family roles on their views about wife hitting or beating among 5,450 participants in the 2005 Egypt Demographic and Health Survey. One half justified wife hitting or beating for some reason. Women from rural areas who were exposed to domestic violence more often justified such acts. Dependent wives whose husbands had more schooling, were blood relatives, and were coresident more often justified such acts. In settings where women tended to marry at older ages, women less often justified such acts. Women's resources and constraints in marriage accounted for the largest share of the variability in their attitudes about domestic violence against women. 相似文献

The dominance of the neoliberal discourse in the sustainability debate has tended to privilege the economy over environment
and social dimensions with implications for what is measured by sustainability monitoring systems. Moreover, systems to measure
sustainability, including those influenced by neoliberal discourse, lack robust definitions and fail to address the interrelationship
between social, economic and environmental contexts. If sustainability indicators are to help understand the interrelated
forces driving change, by providing indications of sustainability, then the indicators should be derived from an epistemologically

In the context of modern portfolio theory, we compare the out-of-sample performance of eight investment strategies which are based on statistical methods with the out-of-sample performance of a family of trivial strategies. A?wide range of approaches is considered in this work, including the traditional sample-based approach, several minimum-variance techniques, a shrinkage, and a minimax approach. In contrast to similar studies in the literature, we also consider short-selling constraints and a risk-free asset. We provide a way to extend the concept of minimum-variance strategies in the context of short-selling constraints. A main drawback of most empirical studies on that topic is the use of simple testing procedures which do not account for the effects of multiple testing. For that reason we conduct several hypothesis tests which are proposed in the multiple-testing literature. We test whether it is possible to beat a trivial strategy by at least one of the non-trivial strategies, whether the trivial strategy is better than every non-trivial strategy, and which of the non-trivial strategies is significantly outperformed by naive diversification. The empirical part of our study is conducted using US stock returns from the last four decades, obtained via the CRSP database. 相似文献

This paper addresses the role of emotion in the qualitative research process and in particular, the effects of emotional experiences on the researcher. Drawing briefly on the literature, we show the importance of emotion for understanding the research process. Whilst this literature acknowledges the emotional risk for research respondents, there is little evidence providing in-depth understanding of the emotions of the researcher. We consider theoretically and empirically, the significance of emotion throughout the duration of a research project. Using our own personal experiences in the field, we present a range of emotional encounters that qualitative researchers may face. We offer suggestions for research teams who wish to develop strategies for 'managing' emotion and effectively utilizing 'emotionally-sensed knowledge'. We conclude that unless emotion in research is acknowledged, not only will researchers be left vulnerable, but also our understandings of the social world will remain impoverished. The challenge therefore is how to construct meaning and develop understanding and knowledge in an academic environment that, on the whole, trains researchers to be rational and objective, and 'extract out' emotion. 相似文献

Abstract Objective: Data about college student sleep were collected and used to develop an education campaign to improve sleep. Participants: On-campus residents at a large state university were surveyed on 4 occasions, October 2005 to April 2007. Sample size was 675 to 1,823 students. Fall 2005 mean age = 18.5 years, SD = 1.03 (range 18–30) years. Initial survey included 935 males and 1,859 females (2005–2006). Matched pairs data (2006–2007) included 91 males and 107 females. Twenty-six males and 22 females participated in interviews. Methods: A survey administered online included the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, along with an 8-question in-person interview. Results: Poor sleep interacted with academics and mental health, and an education campaign positively affected student sleep. Conclusions: Teaching students how to effectively manage sleep can improve their well-being. Sleep may also be a gateway topic for health care professionals to address sensitive health issues such as depression. 相似文献

The purpose of this research study was to increase our understanding of how families living in poverty successfully meet life challenges. Family resiliency provided the theoretical framework for examining family coping and adaptation. This study used a purposive sample of women (N = 128) in families with children attending Head Start. All families lived below or at poverty level, most with 11th grade education or high-school/GED diploma. Content analysis methods were used for data analysis. Results of this study identify the characteristics that promote competence, including how individual, family, and environmental factors are potential stressors that also may serve to promote family resilience. The data indicate that family love and mutual support, as well as faith, help stressed families cope and maintain meaning in spite of lack of control over life circumstances resulting from economic poverty. 相似文献
