War-wounded refugees: labor market integration after two years in Sweden

This study investigated labor market integration in a group of war-wounded refugees after two years in Sweden. The study group consisted of 54 war-wounded asylum applicants ( n =25) and quota refugees ( n =29) who arrived in Sweden in the late 1980s. They were consecutively investigated during hospitalization, shortly after arrival, and followed up two years later. After two years, 24% were at work or were occupied in vocational training courses. The degree of disability was not related to labor market integration. Length of time spent in the municipality was directly associated with labor market integration. Present well-being, Swedish language skill and education were factors related to integration. However, these factors differed in their relation to labor market integration when the length of time spent in the municipality was considered. With respect to the first two years in Sweden, the war-wounded group seemed to follow well an ideal labor market integration process for refugees. A short wait for a municipality to reside in and a careful introduction into the municipality might have been available for this group more than for other refugees.     

Young adults and parental divorce: exploring important issues.

This article discusses the potential impact of parental divorce on the lives of young adult offspring. Parental divorce may upset both social and psychological aspects of the transition to adulthood process. The family roles young adults are expected to assume could be altered by the break-up, as could opportunities for particular young adult pursuits, such as advanced education. Heightened adjustment problems also are likely to result, as divorce produces additional life changes during the highly transitional period of early adulthood. Qualitative data from an exploratory study of 39 college students, ages 18-23, illustrate many of the relevant issues. Suggestions for future research are provided.     

Bibliotherapy for children in foster care and adoption

The bibliotherapeutic technique can help children adjust to the foster care and adoption experience. Appropriate children's books are described and the application and limitations of bibliotherapy are discussed.     

A procedure for stepwise regression analysis

A procedure for stepwise regression analysis for the non-experimental case is suggested. Regarding the problem as a multiple inference one, the procedure picks out the relevant regressors and, based on a slightly new approach, estimates the structure of dependencies among the variables involved.     

Computing asymptotic p-values for EDF tests

In this paper the problem of computingp-values for the asymptotic distribution of certain goodness-of-fit test statistics based on the empirical distribution is approached via quadrature. Through examples it is shown that this approach can lead to considerable time savings over the standard practice of discretizing the underlying eigenvalue problem.     

The art of therapeutic drawing. Helping chronic trauma survivors.

1. Survivors of chronic trauma, who may have survived hundreds of episodes of battering and abuse, have no gauge of what is normal and continue to live in the same emotional climate. 2. The coping patterns that are a result of chronic trauma are below the level of awareness and prevent healthy adaptation. 3. The inclusion of expressive techniques, such as therapeutic drawing, can be used to facilitate the emotional work of chronic trauma issues.
