Hedonism and the Family: Conflict in Values?*

In American society (and maybe all of the “Western world), there seems to be an increasing emphasis on instant gratification and avoidance of pain for its individual members. These two trends—one towards hedonism and the other involving the centrality of the rights of the individual—are closely connected. Both implicate basic values. Both have important effects upon the family. The purpose of this paper is to highlight issues related to these values, discuss their past and potentially future effects on the family, and reflect upon the role of the educator and helping professional in encouraging or discouraging certain biases among their students and clients and in the more general community.     

A Co-Evolutionary Framework for Systemic Family Therapy*

This piece presents a metaphoric scaffold, a Time Cable from which to build an invisible building. The scaffold is temporary, to be torn down when the building is finished, but it can be recreated when a new building is contemplated. As with all such geo-spatial constructs, it is merely a diagram to hold in one's mind while mastering the systemic approach to family therapy pioneered by the Milan Associates. Since this is their own model, they do not need a scaffold. For me, trying to teach their model, it has proved useful as a working tool.     

‘Community’: The Spray-on Solution

Community is one of those ‘motherhood’ words with great potential for mystification of social issues. This paper examines the way the term has evolved and is currently used in Australia. Special attention is given to the contradiction between the claims to radicalism of much community work and the system preserving effect the term actually lends to programs. To illuminate the process under consideration alternative approaches are briefly considered but recognized as generally unacceptable to official social policy and practice because of the implicit threat to the current distribution of power and resources.     

Family-of-origin frames in couples therapy

Six types of family-of-origin frames—coping, modeling, role, definition, reversal, and loyalty frames—are utilized in understanding three common couple interactional situations: pursuing/distancing, overfunctioning/underfunctioning, and blaming/placating. Clinical examples are used to illustrate the process of constructing family-of-origin frames in couples therapy.     

Lesbian, gay, and bisexual homeless youth: an eight-city public health perspective

This article reports on results of a one-day public health survey conducted in six states by homeless youth providers to measure and compare risk factors between lesbian, gay, and bisexual (LGB) homeless youth and non-LGB homeless youth. This article intends to inform the child welfare field on existing gaps in services and areas where more training and technical support is necessary in providing services to homeless LGB youth. The findings point to substantial differences within the homeless youth sample and demonstrate that in addition to the public health risks young people face merely by being homeless, the risks are exacerbated for those who self-identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual. The article informs child welfare providers and policymakers about the substantial vulnerability of LGB youth beyond that of non-LGB homeless youth and the need to fund programming, training, technical assistance and further research to specifically respond to the complex needs of this population.
