What is the relationship between the status of nation-states in the modern world-system and their strategies for conflict management? Using Wallerstein's world-systems theory, Kick's empirical specifications of core, semiperiphery, and periphery, and Black's theory of conflict management, I examine the use of self-help, avoidance, negotiation, and third-party settlement by nation-states. These possible tactics are variously used as forms of social control from below, social control from above, and social control between equals. I argue that the status of nations within the world-system is correlated with the primary mode of conflict management they use at a given time. I speculate that the use of a particular strategy may also subsequently contribute to changes in nations' status. 相似文献

The field of evaluation research has developed rapidly in the past few years. Its growth is marked by:(1) establishment of an'entrepreneurial industry of considerable proportions; (2) emergence of a new profession as evidenced by the founding of professional associations, publication of books and journals, and the development of specialized training programs; (3) recognition of the importance of evaluation in the federal bureaucracy by the establishment of key executive positions in the various offices of the Secretaries; (4) quality control efforts by a variety of stakeholders and watchdog groups; and (5) efforts to address methodological problems and to maximize the dissemination and utilization of studies. In the future, continued federal funding in health, education, and welfare will be dependent on demonstrated program impact, and “sunset legislation.” Moreover, there will be fewer important “policy” evaluations and more administrative and managerial efforts. Evaluation questions, increasingly, will be specified either by Congress or the administering agency, including the setting of design and methodological requirements for studies. Opportunities for investigator-inspired studies and basic methodological development will decrease. 相似文献

From a traditional viewpoint, fathers are seen as the main disciplinarian in the family. However, recent studies suggest that these traditional family role patterns may have changed. In this study, we observed discipline strategies of mothers and fathers toward their sons and daughters. Participants included 242 families with two children (1 and 3 years of age). Findings revealed that parental discipline varied by the age of the children, but that mothers disciplined their children more often than fathers. Fathers, conversely, showed more laxness in response to child non‐compliance. Gender of the children was only related to physical interference, with mothers using more physical interference with boys than fathers, irrespective of birth order. Taken together, these findings highlight the importance of parent gender for parent–child interactions in early childhood, but also suggest that child age should be taken into account as important explanatory factors. 相似文献

The article tries to depict central strands of a Media Cultural Studies that combines various contemporary approaches to the study of the media. Different from previous, mostly disciplinary projects, it calls for an approach that is rooted in social theory, covers a wide range of conjunctures between culturalist and critical viewpoints and aims for a better understanding of the social power of the media. A retrospective look at the pioneering works of the British Cultural Studies tradition helps to delineate such a holistic, theoretical, methodological, and epistemological endeavour and finds the writings of — in this case — Williams and Hall as particularly helpful in formulating topical questions for today’s media theory. 相似文献

This article examines discourses of management and leadership in the light of gender inequalities in social relations and in educational administration in particular. It is argued that women's viewpoints and critiques of masculinist managerial perspectives are important in debates about alternative models of leadership. Interview data from a recent study of a group of six women working in teaching/managing positions in some primary and secondary schools in New Zealand is used to analyse a leadership style and philosophy which cuts across traditional gendered splits between private and public spheres, emotionality and rationality, teaching and administration. In this holistic approach, emphasis is placed on integrating such dichotomies through affiliation with others and power sharing. The paper concludes that such a management style must be supported and valued for the contribution it can make to improving organizational cultures and enhancing school learning and teaching environments. Previous research was extended by connecting maternal attachment representations not only to maternal emotional support and task structuring, but also to maternal discipline. A total number of 62 mothers of preschoolers (Mage = 54 months) completed the adult attachment interview and a self‐report measure of dysfunctional discipline. Two years later, a subsample of 38 mother–child dyads was observed during two laboratory interaction tasks in which the mother and child were induced to have divergent goals. In general, the hypothesized connections between maternal attachment representations and discipline were found, at least when discipline was independently observed. Specifically, as compared to autonomous mothers, non‐autonomous mothers showed more overreactivity, more psychological control and less flexibility in their discipline attempts. Also, their children were less compliant. These differences were more pronounced during a story‐eliciting task than during a block task. These findings suggest that parental behaviors in the discipline domain contribute to the explanation of the intergenerational transmission of attachment patterns. 相似文献
