Applied general equilibrium analysis of trade liberalisation on land-based sectors in Malaysia and Indonesia

This paper presents general equilibrium evaluations of forest sector trade for Southeast Asian exporters. The four scenarios examined range from the 1994 Uruguay Round tariff reductions to a complete liberalisation of forest and agricultural products trade. We find that simultaneous reductions in forest and agricultural sector tariffs make Indonesia and Malaysia worse off. For Indonesia, this is due to the fall in forest rent and agricultural tariff revenues. Malaysia has the highest ratio of agricultural imports to total land-based sector imports, the rise in agricultural prices thus hits Malaysian consumers the hardest.We find that terms of trade effect omitted from the partial equilibrium framework may reduce the welfare calculations for Malaysia and Indonesia in the forest sector trade by as much as 106 and 58%, respectively. This points to the importance of general equilibrium modelling in the logging industry. The same applies to other sector specific analyses where trade is concentrated between few countries.     

Attributional asymmetries in the perception of moving,static, chimeric and hemisected faces

Recent research on asymmetries of facial recognition, emotional interpretation and expression was extended in three studies of facial personality attribution. Male and female judges used 10 adjectives to compare the bilateral aspects of 24 female faces, presented on video. Static (and live) chimeric images elicited more marked differences in personological attribution to the two sides of the face than did moving chimerics. Chimeric and hemisected moving images elicited a similar extent of differential attribution. Cross-validation data indicated that, as hypothesized, left face tended to be seen more often as receptive, intuitive, feeling, pleasant, happy and right-face as outgoing, active, thinking, strong. Aspects of facial asymmetry and its measurement are discussed.This study was supported by the Social Science Research Council (HR 5413). The effective therapist helps the patient make friends with his body and with the cosmos and leaves room for the patient's struggle with the questions of life's meaning brought to the fore by serious illness.     

“Marrying off” children as a developmental stage

Conclusion Marrying off the children is an important developmental stage in adulthood. Part of the very long and complex stage described by Erik Erikson as Generativity vs. Stagnation, this stage, like many earlier life stages, can be understood to give rise to a normative adult crisis that is destabilizing and anxiety-provoking. The marriage of one's offspring requires an ongoing transformation of parental narcissism, part of a developmental process that is intrinsic to parenthood. Issues of selfesteem are revived and reworked during this period. Traditional theory looks to oedipal rivalry or drive conflict of some kind to explain the anxiety at this time. An expanded understanding of narcissism, provided by Kohut and Elson has given us a broader view of these phenomena.The experience of hurt and sadness at a time when there is reason to celebrate can be a profoundly lonely and bewildering experience. As informed clinicians we can alleviate some of the loneliness and guilt about these feelings by understanding the challenge to the self that the marriage of adult children may represent.     

Authoritarian Versus Authoritative Parenting Styles: Application of the Cost Equalization Principle

ABSTRACT

Given the lack of appropriate theoretical analysis in past research on parenting, this article aims to offer solid theoretical explanation for the effectiveness of authoritative parenting over authoritarian parenting by introducing the behavioral-structural model based on the principle of cost equalization. The results of computer simulation using the new theoretical model demonstrate that authoritarian parenting leads to development of a competitive/hostile structure where the child's spontaneous initiation is discouraged and the overall support within the dyad decreases, whereas authoritative parenting leads to development of a cooperative/friendly structure where the child's spontaneous initiation is encouraged and the overall support within the dyad increases. Implications of child socialization in competitive versus cooperative structures as predicted by the new theoretical model are also discussed.     

Monitoring the Impact of Land Reform on Quality of Life: A South African Case Study

This paper outlines the approach that isutilized by the Monitoring and Evaluationdirectorate of the Department of Land Affairs (DLA) in South Africa in assessing the qualityof life for the land Reform beneficiaries. Thepaper begins with an overview of the three LandReform programs in South Africa. The paper thenmoves on to outline the original design formonitoring and evaluating the quality of lifefor land reform beneficiaries. It then proceedsto detail the current Monitoring and Evaluationdesign being utilized, highlighting itsstrengths and weaknesses. The last sectiondiscusses some of the findings of the qualityof life study undertaken in 1999.
