Few studies directly address vulnerable populations' motivation for participating in research. Often motives are expressed spontaneously and typically given post-interview. This article investigates motivation for research participation among informants who have been bereaved by suicide. Informants were specifically asked for their motivation either prior to, or directly after the interview. Four categories of motivations were identified: (1) Helping Others, (2) Venting, (3) Insight, and (4) Just Because. Sixty percent of informants gave more than one motivation. The majority was altruistically motivated; they hoped that by taking part they could play a role in helping to prevent suicide, improving services for the bereaved or moving research forward. Close family members were more likely to be motivated by a desire to help others than more distant family members. Findings are discussed in the context of suicide-related bereavements. Information about research participation as beneficial to others should be given parallel to that of possible strain. 相似文献

The International Wellbeing Index (IWI) has been developed as a complementary measure to already well-known economic measures,
and as a tool for cross-cultural comparisons. It comprises two subscales: the Personal Wellbeing Index (PWI) and the National
Wellbeing Index (NWI). The aims of this paper are two-fold. Firstly, to test the psychometric characteristics of the IWI.
Secondly, to study how people of Algeria, a third world country that is yet suffering from a harsch economical and social
situation, respond to questions dealing with their own lives and life in their country in general, compared to samples from
more developed countries where wellbeing was previously measured. The IWI items were presented to individuals either in a
questionnaire form to be self-rated or in interview sessions. The total of 1417 answers were analysed. As was expected, a
very low satisfaction on both scales was found, compared to the results that were reported in countries, such as Australia
or Hong Kong. Comparisons on the demographic characteristics basis show that women are significantly more satisfied than men
with their personal lives, though no differences were found with regard to NWI. Eldest and youngest age groups rated the PWI
significantly higher than other age groups. Education groups comparisons showed higher ratings on both subscales in favour
of groups with no education and those with university levels. Marginal statistically significant differences were found with
regard to the PWI in favour of the higher earning group, but no differences in the NWI. No statistically significant results
were found as far as marital status, number of children, and income are concerned. The results add to the evidence of the
usefulness of the scale to predict satisfaction of people with their own lives and life in their country. Its psychometric
performance was proved to be very high in terms of validity, reliability and sensitivity. The results were interpreted on
the light of the Homeostasis Theory and the particular situation of the Algerian society. 相似文献

Research indicates that children do not typically understand the connection between counting and cardinality for several months after learning to count, yet parents speak to 3‐year‐olds as though they already understood the significance of counting. The present research was designed to investigate mothers’ awareness of the discrepancy between children's procedural and conceptual mastery of counting. In Study 1 mothers of a hundred 3‐ to 41/2‐year‐olds completed an anonymous questionnaire asking them to anticipate how their child would respond to a series of real‐life vignettes based on widely used experimental measures of cardinal understanding. Most anticipated that their child, irrespective of age, would (1) understand the significance of the last word of a count, and (2) be able accurately to give a specified non‐subitizable number of objects. Comparison with the performance of 54 children from the same local population supported the hypothesis that parents overestimate children's understanding of the cardinal significance of counting. Mothers reported a range of impromptu number‐related activities in which their child had recently participated at home; most of these involved simple procedural counting. In Study 2, 35 mothers of 3‐ to 41/2‐year‐olds completed a modified questionnaire concerning procedural aspects of counting as well as cardinality; their responses were then compared with the performance of their own children. Again, mothers overestimated their children's cardinal understanding, but this was shown not to be a result of a general tendency to overestimate their counting abilities. It is suggested that preschoolers’ counting generally occurs during joint activities in which caregivers may be unaware of the support that they provide, and, provided that the jointly executed count procedures are error‐free, parents implicitly assume a ‘common knowledge’ regarding the cardinal significance of counting. 相似文献

A questionnaire survey undertaken among general practitioner registrars in North Thames in 1998 revealed significant deficiencies in their child protection training. A minority expressed confidence at the prospect of dealing with child protection cases in the future. A new, interactive training package was subsequently developed and delivered to a sample of GP registrars in Northeast Thames in 1999. Preliminary evaluation confirmed that the new training material was sensitive to the needs of recipients and levels of perceived confidence with participation in child protection work were increased. Further work is needed to develop the package and to oversee its successful incorporation into general practitioner vocational training. Copyright © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd. 相似文献

Introducing the topic of body modification, I examine how the body, as cultural symbol of the 21st century, has become the site for exploring subjectivity and creating identity. I ground the 3 articles and 2 discussions that follow in terms of the issues that have revolved around this new, exciting, yet quite challenging subject. Feminists debate whether body modification is a reclaiming of the body or another form of victimization and internalization of the cultural denigration of bodies, especially women's bodies. Clinicians struggle with differentiating self-mutilation from self-empowerment and productive ways of restoring self-structures. Rather than lean in any direction, this introduction aims to open up and broaden the lenses from which we frame and understand the debates. My hope is that this will allow us to rethink the clinical struggles we face as our patients choose to pierce, cut, and reshape their bodies. 相似文献

Increasingly, theorists have suggested that social competence is an evaluative construct that will vary as a function of who is judging behavior. This study examined how two key groups in children's social environments—peers (N = 663, age range = 10.83–15.25 years) and teachers (N = 49)—rated the effectiveness of different behaviors generated by youth in response to physical, verbal, and relational provocation by peers. Results indicated that youth evaluated aggressive responses as more effective than teachers whereas teachers evaluated seeking an explanation as more effective than youth. Both groups judged responses combining assertive and aggressive elements to be more effective than ‘pure’ aggression. Implications for measurement and intervention models of social competence are discussed. 相似文献

Few studies have examined the nature of aggression in emerging adulthood (ages 18–25), a unique developmental period wherein relationships become increasingly important and intimate. Consistent with a greater emphasis on relationships, relationally manipulative forms of aggression may be particularly salient during this time period. Based on content analysis of perceptions of 134 undergraduate students, this study documents a significant spectrum of normative aggressive behaviors among emerging adults. Participant responses were coded into categories reflective of current aggression research. Findings indicate that perceptions of salient aggressive strategies vary by gender of both the aggressor and the victim. For example, male aggression was most often described as being verbal or directly physical in nature, especially in same-sex dyads. In contrast, female aggression was most often described as being indirectly relational, verbal, or non-verbal (ignoring/avoiding) across dyads. However, direct relational aggression was also fairly prominent in perceptions of female aggression toward males. 相似文献

ABSTRACTThis study identified correlates of resilience among adolescents from separated families. Twenty-four adolescents (age 9–14 years) and their parents completed measures of sociodemographic risk and protective factors, interparental conflict, and adolescent responses to conflict. Adolescents reported their behavior, learning, mood, and anxiety difficulties as well as their stress and well-being using a 5-day diary. Resilient adolescents reported more constructive family representations, reported lower interparental conflict, and were from schools and neighborhoods that were more advantaged. Resilient adolescents reported significantly less stress across the diary days than vulnerable adolescents. The results of this study highlight the role of sociodemographic factors, family functioning, and adolescents’ own individual characteristics in their adjustment to their parents’ separation. 相似文献

Low socio-economic groups are typically difficult to recruit and retain in health research, which makes it difficult to investigate their health-related beliefs and behaviours. Low socio-economic parents with overweight or obese children took part in a longitudinal qualitative child obesity study over 12?months. These parents’ views of and recommendations for appropriate recruitment and retention strategies are reported. Their interpretations and suggestions are considered in the light of the difficulties that were experienced in designing the study to meet their needs and the approaches that were found to be more effective in achieving and maintaining a viable study cohort. Relevant aspects of recruitment included remuneration, recruitment locations and the use of appropriate weight-related terminology. Retention factors included protocol flexibility, ongoing remuneration and learning opportunities. Barriers to ongoing participation are also discussed. Suggestions are provided for future qualitative research with low socio-economic families. 相似文献
