OBJECTIVE AND PARTICIPANTS: From 2002 to 2005, the authors tested an interactive, Web-based method to encourage college students at risk for suicide to seek treatment. METHODS: The authors invited students at 2 universities to complete an online questionnaire that screened for depression and other suicide risk factors. Respondents received a personalized assessment and were able to communicate anonymously with a clinical counselor online. At-risk students were urged to attend in-person evaluation and treatment. RESULTS: A total of 1,162 students (8% of those invited) completed the screening questionnaire; 981 (84.4%) were designated as at high or moderate risk. Among this group, 190 (19.4%) attended an in-person evaluation session with the counselor, and 132 (13.5%) entered treatment. Students who engaged in online dialogues with the counselor were 3 times more likely than were those who did not to come for evaluation and enter treatment. CONCLUSIONS: The method has considerable promise for encouraging previously untreated, at-risk college students to get help. 相似文献

Business has played a central role in the debate over Britain's place in the European Union. This paper examines the socio‐economic characteristics of directors of Britain's largest corporations who affiliated either to Business for Sterling or Britain in Europe. It reports associations between directors' social backgrounds and their probabilities of affiliation. Elite university education, club membership, wealth and multiple directorships were all associated with higher propensities to affiliate. The associations are consistent with the idea that directors' social resources allow them to overcome collective action problems as well as supplying them with the motivations to affiliate. They also indicated that directors form a privileged group in that they have a number of very powerful actors who can take unilateral political actions. 相似文献

This study explored the cross sectional association between adverse life events and gambling in a sample of 515 urban adolescents
(average age 17, 55% male, 88% African American). Approximately half of the sample had gambled in the past year (51%); 78%
of the gamblers gambled monthly and 39% had a gambling-related problem. On the other hand, 88% of the sample had experienced
at least one life event in the past year, and those experiencing events tended to live in more disadvantaged neighborhoods.
The mere acknowledgement of experiencing a stressful life event in the past year (yes/no) was not associated with an increase
in odds of being a gambler, with gambling more frequently, or with having a gambling problem. However, when the context of
the event was considered, an association was found between directly experiencing threatening and deviant/violent types of
events and frequent gambling (OR > 2). Additionally, the probability of being a gambler increased as the number of events
experienced increased (aOR = 1.07, 95% CI = 1.01, 1.13, P = 0.013), but problems among gamblers were not associated with the number of events experienced (aOR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.92,
1.11, P = 0.876). During adolescence, life events appear to be connected more with the frequency of gambling rather than with problems

ABSTRACT The Senior Living Enhancement Program was an initiative designed to provide selected services to seniors, including nursing and health promotion, social service coordination, and social and recreational opportunities. The seniors were located at 12 high-rise buildings for the elderly. The main goal of the initiative was to improve the health of seniors in 10 areas called the 10-Keys to Healthy Aging. In general, the 10-Keys to Healthy Aging are strategies aimed at reducing preventable risk factors in the aging population. Over a period of 2 years, seniors showed improvements in a majority of the 10-Keys to Healthy Aging and, therefore, proved the health benefits for elders coming from this service-enriched housing initiative. 相似文献

Abstract In an attempt to promote prevention of cardiovascular disease among college students, a study was conducted to determine whether an educational program originally designed to increase high school students' knowledge of cardiovascular disease would be effective with college students. The specific objectives of the study were to determine college students' baseline knowledge regarding primary and secondary risk factors of cardiovascular diseases, to ascertain their knowledge of the warning signs and appropriate emergency procedures for heart attack and stroke victims, and to evaluate the effectiveness of self-instructional units on the “Risk Factors of Cardiovascular Diseases, Parts I and II” and “Warning Signs and Emergency Procedures for Heart Attack and Stroke Victims.” The results of the study found that the college students were not sufficiently aware of the risk factors of cardiovascular disease or the warning signs and emergency procedures for heart attack and stroke victims. The educational program effectively instructed these students in these areas, and the participants found the materials suitable for college curricula and expressed a desire for more of them. 相似文献
