The Effectiveness of an Out-Patient After-care Group with Previously Hospitalized Alcoholics

Summary The importance of after-care for alcoholics has been emphasizedby the Alcoholic Sub-Committee of the World Health Organization.¹Many writers have stressed this view and some have even attributedrelapses to the lack of vigorous after-care (Vallance, ² Rathod³).This paper reports an appraisal for a fortnightly group after-careservice for alcoholics which was established as an adjunct tothe ongoing treatment programme of an alcoholic unit. Data werecollected to provide some evaluation of the new service.     

The Social Work Task in an Acute Psychiatric In-Patient Unit

Summary This paper reports the results of monitoring all admissionsfrom a prescribed geographical area to an acute psychiatricin-patient unit for a six month period. Members of the hospitalsocial work department assessed all admissions and selectedapproximately one-half of these for high social work input Demographicdata for the whole subject group is examined and compared tothe high input group. The case review system outlined by Goldbergand Fruin (1976) is used to describe the clients' social problemson admission, as well as the social work task, in terms of practicalservices and other social worker activities. These findingsare compared to those of Goldberg et al. (1977) who examinedthe social work task in an area office social services departmentintake team. Despite differences in demographic profiles ofthe two groups and consequently differing social problems, thesocial work task in both settings was found to be similar. Inboth studies 53% of clients were offered some practical (althoughdifferent service) and the most common social work activitieswere found to be assessment, information and advice, and mobilizingresources.     

'It's More of a Production': accomplishing mothering using a mobility device

This qualitative study investigated the conditions and experiences of mothers who used wheelchairs and scooters for full-time mobility. In focused, open-ended interviews, 11 mothers of children aged 6 months to 18 years described sociospatial obstacles and facilitators that influenced how they cared for their children and homes. Results suggest that mothering with a disability consists of embodied and emplaced practices. Women often felt 'out of place' as mothers given the relationship between mothering discourse and mobility devices. Furthermore, the embeddedness of mothering in place meant that the social and material conditions of place served not only as antecedents to mothering challenges, but also structured possible solutions

MANUFACTURING STRATEGY AND BUSINESS ORIGIN OF NEW VENTURE FIRMS IN THE COMPUTER AND COMMUNICATIONS EQUIPMENT INDUSTRIES

With the use of questionnaire data from owners, presidents, CEOs, and chairmen of boards and a logistic regression approach, we analyzed the manufacturing strategies of 64 new-venture firms in the computer and communications equipment manufacturing industries. We found statistically significant differences in manufacturing posture as a function of whether the new venture was corporate-sponsored or independent (i.e., new venture origin). The findings suggest that independent firms attack the market with superior product quality with the use of technology in the public domain. They offer a narrow range of products directed to a few large customers and do not make developing new products a primary issue. In contrast, corporate-sponsored tirms are less concerned with superior product quality but emphasize patented technology and new product development. They provide a broader range of products and service smaller customer orders.
