Remembrance: the Essop brothers,formative realism and contemporary African photography

Remembrance is the title of group of photographic artworks by Hasan and Husain Essop. Made in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, the artworks picture people and places, buildings and landscapes. At first look, the action within the frames is straightforward. The photographs present ancient and modern religious sites in digitally produced, staged scenarios. However, there is an unseen complexity to these composite images that are made of hundreds of individual still shots, shot one section at a time and then meticulously stitched together. One impact of these contemporary artworks is their ability to show the powerful impact of global Islamic culture. Dynamics of place and belonging, the picturesque and landscape, slavery, religion and race are offered to view by means of these images. I offer formative realism as a conceptual framework to think with and against these pictures made by photographic means. I will say something about the concept and context of formative realism, discuss principal features and propose a way of seeing. The central questions are these: what do the Essops’ pictures show us about Islam in South Africa and beyond? How does this seeing matter to the ongoing activity of race, racism and “Othering” now? How does any of this matter to the dynamics of contemporary visual art in South Africa?     

Designing response scales with multi-trait-multi-method experiments

ABSTRACT

Split-ballot multi-trait-multi-method experiments are used to evaluate the quality of measurement of different response scales of survey items gauging “evaluation of government services” and “political trust.” The response scales differ by agree/disagree scales, item-specific scales, total number of categories, and the presence of fixed reference points on their constructing extreme items. The Center for Opinion Studies of the Catalan government in Spain conducted the survey in 2011. The best response scale depends on the complexity of the topic and of the formulation of the question. For simple topics and formulations, the format of the response scale has no effect on the quality of measurement.     

Asymptotic Distribution for Symmetric Spacing Statistics

A new procedure for testing the H ₀: μ₁ = ··· = μ _k against the alternative H _u :μ₁ ≥ ··· ≥μ _r  ≤ ··· ≤ μ _k with at least one strict inequality, where μ _i is the location parameter of the ith two-parameter exponential distribution, i = 1,…, k, is proposed. Exact critical constants are computed using a recursive integration algorithm. Tables containing these critical constants are provided to facilitate the implementation of the proposed test procedure. Simultaneous confidence intervals for certain contrasts of the location parameters are derived by inverting the proposed test statistic. In comparison to existing tests, it is shown, by a simulation study, that the new test statistic is more powerful in detecting U-shaped alternatives when the samples are derived from exponential distributions. As an extension, the use of the critical constants for comparing Pareto distribution parameters is discussed.     

Chainwise Paired Comparisons

The pairwise comparison technique is a building block of the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP), which has been popularly used for multicriteria decision analysis. This paper develops a shortcut technique in which only n paired comparisons forming a closed chain are needed for n decision elements. Together with the development of a simple and intuitive measure of (inconsistency, this technique derives the relative weights of decision elements via easy step-by-step calculations on a spreadsheet format. Its performance has been tested on Saaty's wealth of nations example. It is important to notice that ranking and weights yielded from this alternative technique are identical to Harker's incomplete pairwise comparison solution for the same chain orientation for the example tested.
