The generalized standard two-sided power (GTSP) distribution was mentioned only in passing by Kotz and van Dorp Beyond Beta, Other Continuous Families of Distributions with Bounded Support and Applications, World Scientific Press, Singapore, 2004. In this paper, we shall further investigate this three-parameter distribution by presenting some novel properties and use its more general form to contrast the chronology of developments of various authors on the two-parameter TSP distribution since its initial introduction. GTSP distributions allow for J-shaped forms of its pdf, whereas TSP distributions are limited to U-shaped and unimodal forms. Hence, GTSP distributions possess the same three distributional shapes as the classical beta distributions. A novel method and algorithm for the indirect elicitation of the two-power parameters of the GTSP distribution is developed. We present a Project Evaluation Review Technique example that utilizes this algorithm and demonstrates the benefit of separate powers for the two branches of activity GTSP distributions for project completion time uncertainty estimation. 相似文献

RTI International created a geospatial grid-based sampling methodology that: achieved a probability-based household sample and unbiased estimates; was comparable across countries; used simple frame data available from the in-country census; and was efficient with minimal training to local field staff. The methodology used 1 km2 LandScan world population data, which was further subdivided to smaller grid cells ranging from 50 to 150 m2. To guide fieldwork, georeferenced maps were generated and viewed without an Internet connection using a third-party app and the tablet’s internal global positioning systems receiver. The field staff’s location was displayed in real time as a blue dot enabling field staff to determine household inclusivity. This methodology was successfully implemented for household surveys Latin America, Africa, and Asia. The design is transferable, adaptable, scalable, and can be used anywhere in the world. 相似文献

Applications of multivariate statistics in engineering are hard to find, apart from those in quality control. However, we think that further insight into some technological cases may be gained by using adequate multivariate analysis tools. In this paper, we propose a review of the key parameters of rotating electric machines with factor analysis. This statistical technique allows not only the reduction of the dimension of the case we are analysing, but also reveals subtle relationships between the variables under study. We show an application of this methodology by studying the interrelations between the key variables in an electric machine, in this case the squirrel-cage induction motor. Through a step-by-step presentation of the case study, we deal with some of the topics an applied researcher may face, such as the rotation of the original factors, the extraction of higher-order factors and the development of the exploratory model. As a result, we present a worthwhile framework to both confirm our previous knowledge and capture unexplored facts. Moreover, it may provide a new approach to describing and understanding the design, performance and operating characteristics of these machines. 相似文献

The main models of machine learning are briefly reviewed and considered for building a classifier to identify the Fragile X Syndrome (FXS). We have analyzed 172 patients potentially affected by FXS in Andalusia (Spain) and, by means of a DNA test, each member of the data set is known to belong to one of two classes: affected, not affected. The whole predictor set, formed by 40 variables, and a reduced set with only nine predictors significantly associated with the response are considered. Four alternative base classification models have been investigated: logistic regression, classification trees, multilayer perceptron and support vector machines. For both predictor sets, the best accuracy, considering both the mean and the standard deviation of the test error rate, is achieved by the support vector machines, confirming the increasing importance of this learning algorithm. Three ensemble methods - bagging, random forests and boosting - were also considered, amongst which the bagged versions of support vector machines stand out, especially when they are constructed with the reduced set of predictor variables. The analysis of the sensitivity, the specificity and the area under the ROC curve agrees with the main conclusions extracted from the accuracy results. Adam Smith's idea that wage differences reveal preferences for risk rests on strong theoretical foundations. This paper argues, however, that the dominant approach to identify compensating wage differentials—regressing individual wages on aggregate measures of risk—may lead to arbitrary estimates of these risk differentials. In a dataset with information on both, the incidence of illnesses or injuries across firms and industries, I calculate an implicit value of one injury or illness of about (1990) USD 18,800 pursuing the dominant approach. In contrast, regressing wages on the incidence of risk across firms produces a value of one injury or illness of about USD 11,300. 相似文献

Mixtures of truncated exponentials (MTE) potentials are an alternative to discretization and Monte Carlo methods for solving
hybrid Bayesian networks. Any probability density function (PDF) can be approximated by an MTE potential, which can always
be marginalized in closed form. This allows propagation to be done exactly using the Shenoy-Shafer architecture for computing
marginals, with no restrictions on the construction of a join tree. This paper presents MTE potentials that approximate standard
PDF’s and applications of these potentials for solving inference problems in hybrid Bayesian networks. These approximations

In this paper, we propose a mixture of beta–Dirichlet processes as a nonparametric prior for the cumulative intensity functions of a Markov process. This family of priors is a natural extension of a mixture of Dirichlet processes or a mixture of beta processes which are devised to compromise advantages of parametric and nonparametric approaches. They give most of their prior mass to the small neighborhood of a specific parametric model. We show that a mixture of beta–Dirichlet processes prior is conjugate with Markov processes.
