Women are angry!

This essay examines the BBC comedy pilot Lizzie and Sarah as a dissonant account of contemporary femininities. With reference to work on the grotesque, and to contemporary television comedy's use of the grotesque as a strategy, I argue that this uncommissioned pilot episode offers an incisive critique of contemporary anxieties about middle-aged women and teenage girls. While the narrative employs parody and hyperbole to humorous ends, critical commentary around the show, from its producers and from broadsheet journalists, indicates that it overstepped boundaries in terms of its account of heterofemininity. Comparing Lizzie and Sarah to makeover shows on British television, the episode constitutes an ironic feminist makeover, with its protagonists choosing to kill their oppressors rather than submit to the disciplinary regime of heterofemininity. A close analysis of the dialogue, costumes and mise-en-scene is deployed to read this comedy as a scathing commentary on the continuing limitations of television femininities.     

Listening for and Holding Traumatic Rage in an Intersubjective Intercultural Field

This article highlights various constructs from the perspective of D.W. Winnicott, trauma theories, intersubjectivity, and intercultural practice as guides for listening on multiple levels to inform the biopsychosocial–spiritual assessment and treatment. Using a clinical case composite, the author will illustrate the working alliance with a severely traumatized client, emphasizing the intense transference and countertransference rage and enactments that occurred during the course of the clinical social work practice. The therapeutic holding environment was challenged but maintained by working through relationship breakdowns, restoring intercultural subjective space and containing powerless rage.     

Sí, Yo Puedo Curricula and Police Departments: Educating Immigrant Latinas

ABSTRACT

Immigrant Latinas experiencing incidences of interpersonal violence require services from police departments. In a mixed-methods study using a culturally specific curriculum, Si, Yo Puedo, designed to foster self-esteem and provide education on interpersonal violence and healthy relationships, two groups (n = 14) were conducted in 2015 at a precinct in a midwestern state. This group-format curriculum is a 2-hour, topic-specific educational program, conducted in Spanish, offered in 11 weeks. Participants reported an increase in self-esteem and knowledge of interpersonal violence after completing the program. Findings implicate this curriculum as a suitable service tool for police departments working with immigrant Latinas.     

The private sector in Malaysian construction

Since the introduction of the New Economic Policy (NEP) in 1970, the rapid rate of urbanisation has meant an accelerated growth in the demand for housing. Housing needs have been identified under successive Malaysian Plans as a major social objective, where the overall goal is to ensure that all Malaysians have access to adequate housing.The responsibility for the low-income housing programme rests with the Ministry of Housing and Local Government, who have been unable to keep to housing targets set by successive Malaysian Plans. By 1985, the end of the fourth Malaysian Plan period, the overall shortfall was 56%.Today the private sector dominates the construction scene. Due to the lack of government enthusiasm for solving housing shortages and lack of funds, the private sector is increasingly encouraged by the government to build extensive areas of suburbia in and around the largest cities. In the fifth Malaysian Plan (1986–1990), the private sector is expected to supply 80% of the housing provision.The aim of this paper is: (1) to analyse the composition and structure of the private sector; (2) to discuss the current production process and government action to encourage private speculative construction; and (3) to analyse the performance of the private sector to date in fulfilling the housing targets.     

Family Therapy for Child and Youth Mental Health: A Scoping Literature Review

Early intervention in childhood years is an important part of successful therapies for children and adolescents living with or at risk of mental illness. Family therapy acknowledges the role of family relationships, interactions, and family systems in child and youth mental health. To explore the effectiveness and delivery of family therapy in order to inform current family therapy practice in Australian public mental health services, a scoping literature review mapped key concepts of the past 11 years of family therapy research. Current gaps were noted within the following key concepts: family therapy settings and definitions, the influence of family factors on outcomes, transparency of intervention methods, and the training of family therapists. Further research could be undertaken to address current gaps in the literature, specifically: assessment and intervention processes; typical length of time for a series of family sessions; frequency of sessions; and theoretical foundations linked with most effective outcomes, as identified by clinicians, children, and their families. This research would provide a better understanding of best practice and evidence‐based family therapy practices that work for children and their families to inform family therapy practice in Australia and beyond. This scoping literature review identified that there is a noteworthy variation in the way brief family therapy is provided, both in terms of the duration and frequency of sessions, as well as the theoretical underpinnings employed. Further research is warranted to explore different service contexts and brief versions of family therapy delivery and the outcomes for the children and their families.     

Wilson Confidence Intervals for the Two-Sample Log-Odds-Ratio in Stratified 2 × 2 Contingency Tables

Large-sample Wilson-type confidence intervals (CIs) are derived for a parameter of interest in many clinical trials situations: the log-odds-ratio, in a two-sample experiment comparing binomial success proportions, say between cases and controls. The methods cover several scenarios: (i) results embedded in a single 2 × 2 contingency table; (ii) a series of K 2 × 2 tables with common parameter; or (iii) K tables, where the parameter may change across tables under the influence of a covariate. The calculations of the Wilson CI require only simple numerical assistance, and for example are easily carried out using Excel. The main competitor, the exact CI, has two disadvantages: It requires burdensome search algorithms for the multi-table case and results in strong over-coverage associated with long confidence intervals. All the application cases are illustrated through a well-known example. A simulation study then investigates how the Wilson CI performs among several competing methods. The Wilson interval is shortest, except for very large odds ratios, while maintaining coverage similar to Wald-type intervals. An alternative to the Wald CI is the Agresti-Coull CI, calculated from the Wilson and Wald CIs, which has same length as the Wald CI but improved coverage.     

The Role of Housing Managers in the Implementation of Community Care

This article will outline the response of housing management to the implementation of community care policy in the North East. It will locate housing's role within the broader development of community care policy, and briefly review the reasons for housing's relatively late arrival as a key partner, alongside social services and health, in the planning and delivery of services. Using information gathered from interviews with housing professionals, part-time housing students, voluntary organizations, and workers within health and social services, it outlines and evaluates five main factors which appear to be affecting the successful integration of housing management into the process of planning and delivering community care services in the North East.     

Counting Happiness from the Individual Level to the Group Level

A procedure for identifying the happy individuals in society is indispensable to efforts to align public policy with the needs of the citizenry. Individual self-reports on happiness, however, must first meet the dual requirements of cardinality and (at least) relative interpersonal comparability before they can be used in conjunction with a counting procedure to give a meaningful estimate of group level happiness. The paper demonstrates a count-based measure of group happiness that exhibits these desired qualities using data from the Philippines.
