Use of an autobiographical interviewing approach in the psychosocial assessment process allows the clinician efficient access to rich diagnostic material in a way that is comfortable for the client. This approach invites rather than discourages storytelling and is consistent with recent interest in narrative perspectives on assessment and treatment. The written examination required for membership in the National Association of Social Workers' Academy of Certified Social Workers (ACSW) purports to be a valid indicator of generalist social work knowledge. We tested this contention by administering a practice ACSW examination, published in the official NASW study guide for the test, to 62 M.S.W. students in their first year of study. This practice test is stated to be equivalent in terms of content and difficulty to the actual examination. We blanked out thequestion content for each of 40 practice test items and requested the students to choose the correct answer from the among the four provided. Probability suggests that the average score should be no better than chance, or about 25% correct (one out of four). In actuality our sample of first year students scored, on average, 40.5% correct, which is statistically significantly higher than chance. These results call into question the content validity of the ACSW examination. 相似文献

Recent additions have rendered attachment theory potentially viable for clinical social work practice. The author examines its formulations and possible use, seeing it as an important alternative to other psychosocial approaches that attempt to explain how early childhood experiences may affect later mental health. Significant numbers of adolescents in foster placement plan to live independently following discharge. Mentoring is increasingly being used as a support service to assist older foster youths to make the transition to adult living. A survey of 29 child welfare programs indicate that a variety of mentoring models are in use. The main models are transitional Life Skills Mentors, Cultural-Empowerment Mentors, and Corporate-Business Mentors. Mentoring connects foster wards with a cross-section of community citizens who provide a bridge to higher education and employment, and serve as a resource for transitional problem-solving. Information is needed on the impacts of mentor-mentee matches and efforts to sustain mentor-mentee relationships.Based on a paper presented at the Second National Child Welfare Conference, Division of Child Welfare Research, Arlington, Virginia, 1994. As soon as she becomes aware of her pregnancy, the therapist is confronted with a barrage of issues involving her identity, integration of roles, maternal identification, and redenfinition of important relationships, including those with her patients. While she works at becoming aware of and responding to the dramatic emotional and biological changes of pregnancy, and emerges with corresponding maturational adjustments, her patients enter an often stormy period of therapy in which they respond to the changes in the therapist's appearance, the threat of the growing infant, and the reality of the therapist's needs and inevitable absence for maternity leave. The special event of the pregnancy alters the therapeutic setting and affects both the transference and coun-tertransference, initiating reverberations in the therapeutic relationship which provide opportunities for marked advances in therapy. 相似文献

Multifamily therapy (MFT) is a psychotherapeutic group intervention for patients with severe mental disorders (SMDs) and their families. The present study is a multicenter, randomized, and controlled trial that analyzes the benefit of MFT during outpatient treatment. The recruited patients were randomly assigned to the experimental group (n = 26), which received 24 MFT sessions in addition to their treatment as usual (TAU), or to the control group (n = 29), which received only TAU (individual and family sessions). Six months after the inclusion in the MFT, the experimental group showed a significant decrease in number of visits to the psychiatric emergency services, number of psychiatric admissions, and the days of admission. The need for hospital care 6 months after recruitment was also lower in the experimental group compared to the control group. These results suggest that the implementation of MFT during outpatient treatment facilitates community management of people diagnosed with mental health problems. 相似文献

This study builds on previous research to understand longer term housing experiences in late adolescence and early adulthood for vulnerable college students. Using a biographical, qualitative method, we study high school and college housing and family circumstances for 27 students with homelessness or foster care experience enrolled in 4-year colleges in Georgia. We identified three different housing pathway types in high school—family homelessness, unaccompanied youth and foster care. Housing instability and frequent moves were common in high school among all housing pathway types. In college, students who were able to find low or no-cost housing and those who identified a foster care pathway in high school achieved greater housing stability. Others students experienced a continuation of housing instability that began in high school. Additional funding to cover the cost of on-campus housing would likely contribute to increased stability. Additional strategies, such as rental assistance programmes tailored for college students, may be needed to address housing instability for vulnerable college students. More research on the unmet housing needs and the consequences of housing instability during college for homeless and foster youth is needed to further a housing policy agenda that focuses on practical solutions. 相似文献
