This article reconsiders the arguments of Roth (1966) concerning “hired band research.” Problems associated with different
types of employees, research tasks, and research organizations are distinguished. It is argued that researchers who hire assistants
can minimize the hired hand mentality by: 1) hiring persons who are able to stay on the job long enough to develop commitment
to the project; 2) involving both hired hand workers and researchers in the research process to the fullest extent possible;
3) designing a flexible research project; 4) justifying theoretically each variable, interview question, observation, etc.;
5) collecting qualitative as well as quantitative data; and 6) remaining highly involved in the research project.

The increasing incidence of sole parenthood is justifiably a major concern for policy makers in Australia as elsewhere, not least because it represents an increasing drain on welfare funds. The overwhelming majority of female sole parents, who dominate the sole parent population, and an increasing proportion of male sole parents are in receipt of some form of income support. This article discusses, from an economic perspective, the extent to which the level and availability of income support is an important determinant of sole parenthood and in particular, welfare dependence among sole parents. The economic consequences of business closings and worker layoffs are of great concern to today's work force. The study compares
earnings of 755 workers previous to displacement to 422 displaced workers with new earnings. Variables are identified using
the data supplement of the 1988Current Populations Survey: Displaced Workers. Displaced workers employed in professional and white-collar positions have more favorable predisplacement earnings and new
earnings than workers from other job sectors, but displaced workers who are homeowners and those who have health care coverage
before and following job displacement have a decline in earnings. Displaced workers with some high school education and workers
with 30 to 39 years of job tenure also experience decreased wages. Overall, displacement of American workers stifles the economy
and negatively influences the human capital of the nation's work force.

The purpose of this study was to determine if differences exist in the way seven background, achievement, and family variables explain career maturity attitudes for adolescents with and without a handicap. Using path analytic techniques with data from 70 high school students with impaired hearing and from another 318 with normal hearing, the results suggested more similarities than differences in the patterns of influence among the predetermined variables. The results are discussed in terms of the amount of variance explained, the direct, indirect, and total effects of each of the predictor variables on career maturity, and the subsequent implications for career development theories. 相似文献

Despite the rapid rise in mothers' labor force participation, mothers' time with children has tended to be quite stable over time. In the past, nonemployed mothers' time with children was reduced by the demands of unpaid family work and domestic chores and by the use of mother substitutes for childcare, especially in large families. Today employed mothers seek ways to maximize time with children: They remain quite likely to work part-time or to exit from the labor force for some years when their children are young; they also differ from nonemployed mothers in other uses of time (housework, volunteer work, leisure). In addition, changes in children's lives (e.g., smaller families, the increase in preschool enrollment, the extended years of financial dependence on parents as more attend college) are altering the time and money investments that children require from parents. Within marriage, fathers are spending more time with their children than in the past, perhaps increasing the total time children spend with parents even as mothers work more hours away from home. 相似文献

The growing literature on sibling relationships throughout their lifespans is of great importance to those working in the child welfare system, and in adoption services in particular. Sibling bonds are important to all of us, but they are particularly vital to children from disorganized or dysfunctional families. These relationships assume even greater importance when children from these families enter the care system. Supporting and sustaining these sibling bonds should be, and most often is, a priority throughout the child welfare system, with practice literature providing guidelines for arranging and sustaining sibling contact. However, children in the care system may also have dysfunctional sibling relationships as a result of their early experiences, and sibling visitation alone may not be enough to ensure a healthy, long-lasting relationship among siblings. Some form of sibling therapy, or 'clinically supervised visitation,' may be required to help children remove the barriers to form mutually satisfying relationships and to reinforce life-long relationships with each other. 相似文献
