The structural organization and micropolitics of everyday secret telling interactions

The interactions that typically precede and follow explicit secrets display a structural organization of sequentially ordered items that form the vehicle for micropolitical processes of reality construction, selectivity and coalition making. Our data showed a preference for secret receivers to accept the frame, construction, political formulation, bonding, and coalitions of explicit secrets. The teller can define information as exclusive, select the secret recipient, specify the exclusivity rules, and infuse the information with political vectors. After the secret is told the power shifts to the receiver who can then sanction the teller for divulging a confidence, and/or choose to break the explicit and implicit rules and alliance of the preference system that organizes secret telling.     

Is there a physician union in your future?

Physician unions are in the news. Patient management and patient care decisions are increasingly being taken out of the hands of physicians and put into the hands of "The Suits." To take their case for a return to physician-driven patient care to the people, some physicians are joining unions. Some are even collectively bargaining for salary and other issues that are historically more closely associated with unions. The simple fact is that physician unions exist and the number of physicians joining them is expected to increase. What are the pros and cons of unionization? What motivates physicians to join unions, and what potential negative and positive factors are associated with physician unionization? This article reviews the pros and cons and the issues related to physician unions, for physicians attempting to answer the question, "Is there a union in my future?"     

The Role of the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants

The position of Special Rapporteur on the Human Rights of Migrants was established in 1999 by the Commission on Human Rights. During the short period since her appointment, the Special Rapporteur has directed her attention to examining ways and means to overcome obstacles impeding the full and effective protection of the human rights of migrants, and also examining difficulties for the return of migrants who are undocumented or in irregular situations. This schedule has involved visits to governments and the dissemination of information on the legal framework and aspects of the mandate designed to explain the complexity of migration. The Special Rapporteur calls for increased efforts to ensure success of the World Conference against Racism, Racial Discrimination, Xenophobia and Related Intolerance, to be held in Durban, South Africa, in 2001. She also encourages those governments which have not yet ratified the International Convention to take the necessary steps.     

The influence of logo design on country image and willingness to visit: A study of country logos for tourism

This study examines the influence of tourism logo design on people's country image and their intention to visit the country being promoted. In an online survey, undergraduate students were exposed to the tourism logos of Australia, Kenya, and Malawi. The results show that students’ evaluations of a country's logo significantly affected their image of the country and their willingness to visit it after controlling for pre-existing knowledge and attitude toward the object country.     

Support system for management of shares ergonomic

This article discusses the development of a computerized support to demands for treatment of a wide spectrum and diverse nature. Developed under SPM platform (Situa??o, Problema e Melhoria), the practitioner seeks to provide an ergonomic aid from the identification and characterization of the processes of analysis demands. The interest of a technological support the practice of ergonomics is a domestic origin, which already features a wide universe. For purposes of this article will be drawn the line defined by the universe in the Federal Public Service occupations within the guidelines set Subsystem Integrated System for Health Care Workers of the Federal Government. The development of this system initially intended to assist the practitioner in ergonomics mapping situations in which the federal public servant has been undergoing for the second time that can classify and then treat them.     

Evaluation and control of ergonomics actions in federal public service: the case of FIOCRUZ-RJ

This article presents information about the development of the dissertation. Deals with the production of ergonomic diagnosis in the environments and work processes of an important center of research and development in Public Health, FIOCRUZ. Critically evaluates the performance of a team promoting and facilitating the process of implementing ergonomic changes suggested. Through analysis of documents and statements by some managers and representatives of Human Resources was possible to identify the factors that facilitate and hinder the implementation process, linking them to the organization of the institution and conduct of the agents involved. Finally, it makes a reflection on practice, results and developments involved in the processes of change initiated by the ergonomic actions, proposing its replication along with other institutes of the Civilian Personnel of Federal Public Administration.     

Resettled Refugees and Food Insecurity in the U.S.; Exploring the Caseworker’s Role

When refugees arrive in their new resettlement country, they are designated to work with a caseworker employed with a resettlement agency who helps them acclimate to their new environment and break down new challenges. Food insecurity is one such challenge that resettled refugees face. This study looked at the role that caseworkers play in helping clients navigate food security. Eight caseworkers from three resettlement agencies participated in semistructured qualitative interviews. Data analysis revealed four categories: the caseworker’s role, linking clients to benefits, concerns about food, and caseworkers’ perspectives. The main concerns revolved around federal food assistance benefits, reflecting past study findings, and warrants further investigation into the efficacy of such programs. Moreover, the caseworkers’ perceived role in terms of food security was vague and inexplicit from the Cooperative Agreement protocols. Food security focused training could improve caseworker’s capacity to help clients adapt to their new food environment.     

European attempts to govern African youths by raising awareness of the risks of migration: ethnography of an encounter

Contemporary EU governance of migration outside its territorial borders aims to control mobility through policing measures, but also to shape the subjectivities of potential migrants so that they ‘discipline themselves’ to fit European immigration priorities. This is illustrated by the organisation by intergovernmental and non-governmental agencies, in several African countries, of ‘information’ campaigns and participatory activities to convince youths to stay rather than emigrate. Through an ethnographic account of my encounter with the leaders of a youth group involved in participatory activities in Dakar (Senegal), this article explores the assumption that youths can be governed in this way. I argue that awareness-raising initiatives had little hold over the thoughts of local youths, and were reappropriated by the association leaders I met. This was largely due to ‘discontinuities’ between agencies’ and local youths’ perceptions of migration and development, as well as NGOs’ past and present work with youth group leaders. Theoretically, these conclusions add to research emphasising the force of human mobility over EU policing measures, whilst also highlighting the agentive role of local dynamics.     

Efficacy of a Web‐based Intervention for Concerned Spouses of Service Members and Veterans with Alcohol Misuse

Concerned partners (CPs) of service members and veterans who misuse alcohol face help‐seeking barriers and mental health problems. We used multiple regression to evaluate the efficacy of Partners Connect, a four‐session web‐based intervention (WBI) to address military CPs’ mental health and communication. We randomized 312 CPs to the WBI or a control group. Five months later, WBI CPs reported significant reductions in their anxiety and increases in their social support compared to control CPs. Intervention dose was also associated with improved WBI CP outcomes. Partners Connect appears to fill a need for families who face help‐seeking barriers and provides an alternative to traditional care for those who may not otherwise seek help.     

Welcoming America: A Case Study of Municipal Immigrant Integration,Receptivity, and Community Practice

A growing number of leaders in towns and cities across the United States have embraced policies encouraging receptivity and integration of immigrant populations. This article examines this phenomenon and how communities are seeking greater immigrant integration. To do this, we describe immigration federalism and how it influences receptivity. A discussion of the organizational networks that facilitate greater immigrant integration follows. We consider Welcoming America, a nonprofit organization that serves as a convener for dialogue and policy change, as a case study among these larger organizational networks. The article concludes with a broader examination of implications for receptivity and integration in community practice work.
