What Makes People Hot? Applying the Situational Theory of Problem Solving to Hot-Issue Publics

Using a controversial issue that has drawn massive media coverage in South Korea, the government decision to resume imports of US beef, this study tested the applicability of the Situational Theory of Problem Solving (STOPS) to the rise of a hot-issue public. A survey of 300 respondents explored the perceptual, cognitive, and motivational antecedents of active information behaviors. Results suggest that the STOPS applies well to this unique sociopolitical situation, and that the theory works cross-culturally not only in the United States, but also in South Korea. In addition, we examined the role of cross-situational characteristics in detail, looking at whether political interest, prior experience in protest, and other sociodemographics could affect situational perceptions and cognitive frames. Theoretical and practical implications for future research and practices are discussed.     

Relationship matters: How government organization-public relationship impacts disaster recovery outcomes among multiethnic communities

Government and emergency management (EM) agencies play a leading role in managing natural disasters. However, it is less well understood how the quality of the relationship between government and various publics may impact long-term disaster-coping and recovery outcomes. Extending the relationship management framework to the context of disaster management, the current study tests the relationships among different ethnic publics’ OPR quality, their communicative behaviors of seeking government and EM information, and disaster-coping outcomes. Results suggest that government OPR quality is positively related to information seeking and major disaster-coping outcomes, including self-efficacy, collective efficacy, and community resilience perceptions. Moreover, the extent to which OPR quality impacts disaster-coping outcomes significantly diverges across ethnic lines. Results provide implications for multicultural relationship management in the context of post-disaster recovery and community building.

福柯的哲学围绕知识、权利和主体三个概念构成,而主体是其核心概念。福柯认为主体是生命力、知识体系与社会权力互相作用下的产物。随着现代话语模式的终结,由这种话语模式构成的“人”也将随之终结。在前“人”离去的空间里,人必须开始自我建构,即利用“自我技术”进行自我生产。福柯对文化的边界研究、他的社会边缘心理以及社会边缘行为相辅相成,其最终目的是摆脱现代性的控制,获得自由的极限体验,并且不惜为此付出死亡的代价。
