'To Teach Them How to Live' The Politics of Public Health from Tuberculosis to AIDS

Abstract The AIDS crisis has aroused considerable interest in the critical examination of public health. Much of this work has come from the perspective of 'cultural analysis', combining postmodernist theories with the politics of radical pluralism'. This work constitutes a rejection of Marxist state theory, and indeed has directed attention away from the state as an object of inquiry. This article is a response to 'cultural analysis', which uses an historical examination of public health in Canada to shows the ways in which it has been oriented around the state, reflecting the character and limits of social policy.     

Towards a Conceptual Model of Community Social Work

Summary This paper examines different ways of conceptualizing communitysocial work. Firstly it looks at the conceptualization by areasof work and critically reviews the three-model formulations,and then it analyses the various dichotomous formulation foundin the literature. The conclusion reached is that a dichotomousformulation is both conceptually and practically preferable,and the dimension of directive/non-directive type of professionalintervention is the most comprehensive continuum. In conclusion,the paper attempts to show how dichotomous dimensions can beused to research or evaluate community work projects and interventions.     

Social Process, Space Usage: Reflections on Socialisation in Homes for Children

Summary This paper analyses the links between social processes and spaceusage through an examination of socialization and patterns ofspace use in local authority homes for children. Concepts of’family group‘ and ’responsibility‘are discussed using data from a participant observation studyas a basis, drawing attention to the relationship between socialpower and meanings attributed to architectural space.     

The romantic heresy

L'apparition de l'amour romantique en chrétienté du douzième siècle et sa légitimation éventuelle comme base pour la sélection du conjoint sont expliquées en terme du contraste idéologique entre l'amour romantique (mania), l'amour chretien (agape-caritas), et le mariage féodal de convenance (amour pragmatique). Les institutions sociales supportant chaque légitimation sont analysées. L'amour romantique était particulièrement approprié aux aspirations de mobilité des chevaliers sans terre, vu qu'il mettait en question l'emphase sur le devoir dans l'amour chretien et le mariage féodal, sans proposer un renversement marcusien complet du Principe de réalité pour le Principe du plaisir.
The emergence of romantic love in twelfth-century Christendom and its eventual legitimation as a basis of mate selection are explained in terms of the ideological contrast of romantic love (mania) with Christian love (agape-caritas) and feudal arranged marriage (pragmatic love). The social institutions supporting each legitimation are analysed. Romantic love is found particularly suited to the status striving of the landless knights, as it challenged the emphasis on duty in Christian love and feudal marriage, without proposing a complete Marcusian overthrow of the reality principle in favour of the pleasure principle.
