Focusing on the situation in France, the author analyses the link between the notion of 'disability' and the way 'disabled people' are integrated into society and normalized. Throughout the 20th century disability has been defined in France in terms of divergence from a social norm. This definition leads to a normalization process, which consists of bringing disabled people into line with the able-bodied norm. Based on Goffman's analysis, the author shows the political and 'personal' consequences of this normalization. She then describes certain recent evolutions, showing that another form of normalization is progressively emerging, not through alignment with a norm, but through working on the norm. Using Garfinkel's analysis the author shows how this new normalization process transforms the meaning of 'living together'. 相似文献

How does servant leaders' unique ability to place each follower's needs above their own influence relationships between followers and impact their collective performance? In a study that integrates principles of servant leadership with the social comparison theoretical framework, we tested a group-level model to examine how servant leadership induces low perceived differentiation in leader-member relationship quality (perceived LMX differentiation) within a group, which strengthens team cohesion and in turn positively influences team task performance and service-oriented organizational citizenship behaviors (service OCB). Our sample comprised 229 employees nested in 67 work teams. Structural equation modeling results indicate that servant leadership significantly predicts low perceived LMX differentiation; perceived LMX differentiation is strongly related to team cohesion such that the lower the perceived differentiation, the stronger the team's cohesiveness. And, team cohesion is also strongly related to both the team's task performance and service OCB. Perceived LMX differentiation and team cohesion mediate the effect of servant leadership on both team task performance and service OCB. 相似文献

We introduce a specific duration model to analyze the prediction of the credit rating migration. We consider hazard rate processes based on multi‐state autoregressive conditional duration models. To take account of the economic context, we model the conditional mean of the duration between two ratings by means of a latent process. To this purpose, a dynamic‐ordered probit model is developed to describe the directions taken by the ratings in the presence of multiple states. Widening of educational disparities and a narrowing female advantage in mortality stem in good part from disparities in smoking. The changes in smoking and mortality disparities across cohorts and countries have been explained by an epidemic model of cigarette use but are also related to life course changes. To better describe and understand changing disparities over the life course, we compare age patterns of smoking in three cohorts and two nations (France and the US) using smoking history measures from the 2010 French health barometer (N = 20,940) and the 2010 US National Health Interview Survey Sample Adult File (N = 20,444). The results demonstrate statistically significant widening of gender and educational differences from adolescence to early and middle adulthood, thus accentuating the disparities already emerging during adolescence. In addition, the widening disparities over the life course have been changing across cohorts: age differences in educational disparities have grown in recent cohorts (especially in France), while age differences in gender disparities have narrowed. The findings highlight the multiple sources of inequality in smoking and health in high-income nations. 相似文献

Associations between observed mother–adolescent interactions during a conflict task and adolescents’ information management strategies were examined in 108 primarily middle class, European‐American adolescents (M = 13.80 years, SD = 1.52) and their mothers. Teens who communicated more clearly disclosed more about personal and multifaceted activities, lied less about personal activities, and engaged in less avoidance regarding multifaceted and prudential activities. Mothers’ clear communication was associated with less adolescent disclosure and more avoidance about personal and multifaceted activities. Teens with more receptive mothers omitted less prudential information but avoided discussing prudential issues more. Maternal warmth was not associated with information management. The results highlight the need to distinguish between parent and teen behaviors and between affective quality and specific communicative behaviors. 相似文献

This study compares input control based on aggregate shop loads with that based on bottleneck resource loads. Two appropriate release mechanisms are developed and compared in flow and job shops that have various levels of a bottleneck constraint. Simulation results show that both the level of bottleneck and the flow pattern influence the effectiveness of the strategies. Release based on aggregate loads works well when shop loads are balanced or when there is a bottleneck but the flow is highly structured, as in a flow shop. Release based on bottleneck loads works best when flow patterns are less structured, as in a job shop. 相似文献

We examine if commonly used distress measures, rates of psychiatric disorders, and chronic health conditions are affected
by alternate measures of race-ethnicity for African Americans and Caribbean blacks. We examined two alternative self-identification
measures to investigate if their influence might differ. A study on national household probability sample of non-institutionalized
African Americans (n = 3,570) and blacks from Caribbean countries, who now live in the United States (n = 1,621), was conducted between February 2001 and June 2003, using a slightly modified version of the Composite International
Diagnostic Interview. The method used to measure black race and ethnicity has influence on physical and mental health outcomes.
The distributions of depressive symptoms are not affected, while the distributions of DSM IV disorders and chronic health
conditions vary by race and ethnic self-identifications among the African American and Caribbean black populations. There
are serious implications of using alternate measures of race-ethnicity on the distribution of physical and mental health morbidity
among African Americans and Caribbean blacks. The conceptualization and assessment of race-ethnicity should be carefully considered

The effectiveness of independent directors is empirically addressed in the Southern European context using a sample of 221 publicly traded firms during the 2001–2007 period. Drawing on the socioemotional wealth approach, we focus on family control and influence to test whether there are significant differences in the effect of independent directors on the firm’s performance among non-family businesses (NFBs) that have a non-family large shareholder, and family businesses (FBs). In doing so, we consider the heterogeneity of FBs by testing whether the FB’s life cycle moderates the effectiveness of independent directors. To that end, we differentiate among founder lead family businesses and non-founder lead family businesses. Moreover, we test whether dual leadership structures, in particular when the family chief executive officer is also the chairperson of the board, moderates the effectiveness of independent directors. A cross-country and panel data design was used, taking into account the endogeneity problem arising in studies of corporate governance. The results show that the contribution of independent directors to a firm’s performance differs for NFBs and FBs. Moreover, findings confirm that in FBs, contribution is moderated by the generational stage of the FB and by the leadership structure of the firm. 相似文献
